I had a Rhoad Island rooster that didn't attack the family, but he attacked other chickens. And it was obviously that he wanted to kill them. He was extremely big and vicious. We put up with him long enough, and he is no longer with us.

I never killed a chicken before, but this one it was a pleasure.

Don't mean to butt in, but I have been reading this post. I recently had to kill my one Cornish X (a test case to see if we liked them) LOL! He was suddently attacked by my turkeys and pecked severely on the back of his head (he had a HOLE). I needed to butcher him ASAP to put him out of his misery. I followed the instructions by "frugal" on the Meat Chickens Sticky. It was not bad, I thought the cutting the neck artery would be hard, but I since I didn't have a killing cone I cut the bottom off a milk jug and hung it on the fence with zip-tyes and put him in it. It was much easier with him there quiet and upside down. Anyway, it is hard but as many have found, you can do it when you need to.

Just so you get the idea of how sneaky this roo was he would hide and sneak. He even tried to flog me when my son and I when we are on the mower!

You did the right thing. I have a roo that has tried to flog me in the face a few times over the last week. When I bend down to get the eggs out of the nest boxes he flies in the pop door and tries to get my face. If he keeps it up I am going to have to do the same.

There's nothing wrong with dispatching an unruly roo and NOT eating him. Nothing wrong with making dinner from him if you wish. Polish are rather skinny breeds, and many wouldn't consider them worth the effort. Especially if you're not accustomed to both dispatching and preparing a bird for the table. But some folks would go ahead and harvest all the edible bits anyway.

I just say this for folks struggling with the decision to dispatch an unruly roo and having issues with not only the initial act of culling, but then wondering "ewww, so now we have to eat him too?" And therefore putting off the decision to cull, and leaving a potentially dangerous animal running around the yard.

Sometimes it's just traumatic enough to dispatch your first chicken. It may not be the best time to learn a whole new skill and try to prepare it for the table. You could offer it to a friend or neighbor who would like it for their table, or just turn it into good fertilizer for a fortunate tree or bush. Whatever suits you best.

Then enjoy the newfound peace & freedom in your roo-less yard.

we have have beef cattle on our ranch so when roosters attack us we get our electric cattle stick( used for moving cows that dont want to move) and shock them with it for a second, after a few times the most they'll do is watch you if they can't reconize you.
