I truly almost peed my pants when I got to that part.

Sorry about your roo. Hope the soaking helps.

Ruth- thanks for the towel idea, and laying him on his side......that really helped. After the soak (20 min) I has able to look at his foot pretty good. Truthfully I dont even know what I am looking for...it looks like an alien to me!!!!

scales and feathers that are shrink wrapped poking out of swollen red skin. I didnt see anything that looked like an injury....I put antiseptic (sp) cream on the worst looking most swollen areas and put him back in the chicken hospital...where he will have to stay till I get home tomorrow.

Sheesh DH will just probably toss a blanket over him and forget about him!!!

Young son and I have been planning this over night trip to my friends house for a month so I have food and water in with Nikki Roo, will go turn the eggs in the bator once before I leave (then call DH in the morning to remind him to do it ) and I fed and watered both age groups out in the garage, and will feed and water the 3 day olds before I leave.

hopefully we wont have any "animal" related issues while I am gone. I need to feed the new kitten to since I dont think DH knows where the cat food is either.

you all have been so helpful!!! I am hoping this wont have to turn into a vet trip!

Glad it did. It's kind of like how the Dog Whisperer puts them in a submissive position - somehow seems to work with chickens also.

In that last picture, it appears that there is a spot on the bottom of the foot pad that could be bumblefoot. That wouldn't account for all the really red parts on top of the foot, though. Check that out, see if it looks like a dark callous on the pad.

Ok, well we just got back home...and checked on all the animals...fresh food and water. Nikki Roo needed his hospital room cleaned and was out of food and water...so he is eating at the moment, and after I pick up some messes around the house ( take out garbage, start fire, pick up newspapers) I will take the big boy out and soak his foot again, but it looks like some of the swelling is down!!!! Give you more updates after I take a closer look at him.

swelling and redness are going down...he was crowing up a storm this morning (first crow I have heard from him in a week). We havent dont a soak yet today....we slept in a little. But soon as we get coffee and something to eat he will get a soak....he loves his special food and his face looks strong again!! Hope he is going to keep getting better. I will have DS take pics when we soak his foot today

ok, here are some more pics....the swelling is down a bit, and I finally found a black spot on his bottom of his foot that wouldnt just wash off (like poo or dirt would) I picked at it a little and couldnt get it to turn loss, how do I know if that is the cause, and then if it is, how to I get it out?

Here is that pic (sorry so blurry)

A case of "Bumblefoot". This is caused from jumping down in the morning and landing on a hard surface. Put some hay or soft sand in the bottom of his coop and lower the roost to 1 to 2 feet. Bumblefoot is hard to take care of once it gets in the pad of their foot but I would suggest clipping the feathers around the area, cutting into the pad and taking the core or 'kernal" out of the center of the cut pad. Clean the cut with peroxide,, put neosporin on the center and wrap the foot so dirt won't get in it. A coop to live in for a few days may be better will a 4X4 block of wood to roost on.Clean it with hydrogen pyroxide, use the neosporin and change the dressing and re-wrap for a few days. until it starts to heal. Shots of antibiotic or pills of antibiotic wouldn't hurt either for 5 days along with the surgery.
