thanks, yes...we are going to let him out for a bit tomorrow. And I have NO FEAR of him now. I feel sorry for him.....it looks so painful!! and he is stuck in a box in the house (well he's in a med/large) pet taxi.

I am also giving him asprin, he loves his food! thats a good thing...he eats, drinks, and poops nornally.

if hes "acting" fine, im sure he'll be fine....its just figuring out what it is if anything i guess....hopefull tomorrow will tell when you see him walk...if it were me even if he walks fine, id keep him up for a few more days to keep an eye....or at least until you get some lower roosts...if possible...mine are high too (i mean like at least 12 feet---theres lower ones, but they choose the high and he may do the same even if u put the low ones in unless u take down the high ones), but I havent had a problem, yet, that i know of *knocks on wood*

Hi..i am very new to this whole thing..but..to me..i see the red going up quite a bit up his leg!...it seems to go all the way up to his ankle (at least)...i'm going by the pic only though..can you get him to a vet for meds?..or even call a vet to see if they will perscribe a med for him..because, to me..the way i see the red line going up his leg...he needs some "real" meds....you have my best wishes!..take care, Wendy..BTW..i give you SO much credit for doing all you have done with him!..

Antibiotics are probably doing nothing other than increasing the percentage of resistant bacteria that can share the resistance genes with infectious bacteria thus possibly causing a future headache when you really need to kill something off.

I still think it's just massive irritation due to the big feathers on the foot and having to walk around with them in our damp NW climate. Kind of like chafing. Being a light skinned bird probably just makes it stand out more. Plus, there are RIR's and other clean legged breeds who's legs are a bit red on the sides, especially when it get's cold out this time of year. My lightly feathered roo feet are always a bit irritated till the feathers wear down and he almost looks clean legged. The high roost and jumping down probably just hurt his ankle in the process. My highest roost is about 3 feet from the ground. I've got heavy birds who I'd rather not see jump down 10 feet even though they've cleared the 5 foot fence and landed on rocks no problem.

I really don't think you have anything to worry about with the roos legs and that really there isn't any medication that is going to make the red go away. Good luck with what ever you decide!

Edit:

Here are some links to provide example of a "normal" red on the legs from past posts. I just think his are red and add to it the feathers being irritated when he walks. No need to stress out and medicate for things that might just be natural and look bad due to our crappy weather of late... such as the cold front that is to sweep in this weekend!

if there IS an infection..antibiotics/vet perscribed meds WILL help....but..again..ONLY if there IS an infection present...otherwise the meds will be useless and CAN cause more harm than good!...but..from the pics you have posted..i see a definate red line going up the leg...maybe my computer screen color is off??..

..please let me know if it is(honest!)... because my computer is crummy and old..LOL..thanks!

There is a red line up the sides of the feet, but it doesn't look like an infection.

Like this red (from one of the links):

Is perfectly normal. The feathers sticking out just doesn't help the way it looks. You could take the bird in to see if there is a real infection, but I doubt it. Doesn't hurt if you can find a vet to take a sample.

thanks for another pic silkie!...like i said..my computers screen is crummy..

thank you so much..at least i will sleep a little better (hopefully)

yea, there is read all the way up his leg, I am concerned about that but mostly the red way swollen toes. (an the swelling seems to al be around the feather shafts).

Our camera doesnt take the best pics without a flash, and withe the flash they get washed out...so the pics arent the best....and then to top that off...I am the only one that can/will hold nikki roo AND the only one that knows how to use the camera worth a poop! So it's not the best pics.....we do have a camera MIL gave us...I think I might try that...see if I can get a pic of him (his foot) while he is in his carrier...and then more tomorrow.

If I can get a good one (better pic) I will post in a bit.

I think I will stop the antibiotics, I was wondering about about that...thanks.

Also, I think it might be getting to DH....seeing me stress out, worry, and wonder abotu him, and tired of a rooster crowing in the house most the day that he might be giving in and saying we can take him to a vet if he doesnt do well tomorrow for his playtime outside.

thanks SO MUCH!

woo hoo! i new you could do it! wear the DH down that is lol
