That's what I was thinking too! So now we have both given our ages away!
I have a SIL that is quite a bit younger than I. Her baby girl just turned a year old. Last night she showed me a smurf doll she had just bought for her daughter. I said Wow I remember the Smurfs! She said "Oh no, they haven't been around THAT long, have they?!!!"
***DISCLAIMER***
i am not trying to offend anyone....innocent question about to be asked!
why would you want to do that to the chicks?
if it was for ID reasons would it not be easier to mark the shell with a pencil or some sore of veggie based wax crayon that wont harm the chick during incubation?

Even pen and permanent marker won't penetrate the shell or harm the chick. Crayons and pencil rub off.
But given that any breech - like injection/porous eggs and cracks, risks introducing bacteria or injuring the chick, I'm afraid as much as I value each egg I try to hatch I could in no way do this.
I think it's up to the individual and a totally personal choice and yeah, multi-colors are cute but I'd bet the big hatcheries lose upwards of 30% and more doing it. I couldn't do that to my hatch rate.
If you are against this why get on her thread? It is not against the law in her state, food coloring is not toxic, and when you vacinate a chick you put it in the egg just like she did.
Just had to add my 2 cents I am tired of people in this group trying to make people feel bad about things they do.

Maybe I misread its intent but I only read pure curiosity, not a "I'm for/against it" but a "I would like to be educated on its purpose". But again, maybe I read it like that because I would like to know the same thing. I'm not for/against it, I just don't understand.
I was on the thread to see what her hatch rate was and out of curiousity. If it's a risk she's willing to take - they're her birds, they certainly are cute.
It's wrong to mention the risks? To consider them openly? Don't post on a public forum then.
I didn't condemn her. I said I couldn't do it. I don't even care if it's legal or not, they're HER chickens. Big brother can go bite a wall.
There are other things that people do with their birds, that I will actually disagree with. Gosh, debate among individuals - it's so bad.
It's up to her, they're hers. I don't think she's evil or even wrong. I hope they do make it and they are adorable colored like that - I admit it.
I just wouldn't affect my hatch rate for novelty results. Some people will read this thread and not realize that it DOES reduce hatch and survival rates, so does vaccinating but vaccination is not for novelty's sake.
Especially new people. When every chick matters to a newbie, (who is usually counting them before they're hatched) someone should mention the additional risk.
If you like it or love it and accept the risks - that's one thing.
If no one mentions the risks - someone is going to have a poor result and not understand why.
So yes, I will post on a thread like this even if I'm not going to do it. Public Forum.

If that was directed at me I am really sorry you mis read my post thats why i put the disclaimer in...it was in no way shape or form meant to cause a dispute...i just wanted to know why you would do it?...was there another reason other then ID...
who knows there could have been a really good reason like a blue pigment would have made the lacing on a chick easier to see and therefore be graded a show quality bird vs. a pet quality bird... (I dont know I am pullin stuff out my backside for an example here)
it was truly an innocent question not meaning to provoke anything

I know it was and innocence and newness is something that needs an answer.
It's usually done just for the cute.
Since it reduces hatch and survivability - it's counter productive for marking stock - for things like color/breed/breeding group.
