I feel like I'm a dying breed

In the Year 2525 Visage Lyrics

In the year of 2525
If man is still alive
If woman can survive
They may find
In the year of 3535
Can't tell the truth, can't tell no lie
Everything you think, do and say
Is in the pill you took today
In the year of 4545
Won't need no teeth ,won't need your eyes
Won't find a thing to do
Nobody's gonna look at you
In the year of 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your side
Your legs have nothing to do
Some machines doin' that for you
In the year of 6565
Won't need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your sons, pick your daughters too
From the bottom of a long glass tube wouwo
In the year of 7510
If god is commin' he should make it by then
Maybe he'll look around and say:
"Now it's time for the judgement day!"
In the year of 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty hand
He'll leave a salient place where man has been
Or tear it down and start again wouwo
In the year of 9595
I'm wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything earth had to give
And he's put back nothing wouwo
Now it's been 10.000 years man has cried a million tears
For what he never knew now man's dream is through
But through eternal light the twinklin' of starlight
So very far away now it's night to yesterday

Woodmort, our backgrounds and ages are similar. Parents were farmers. Sold the farm because my dad was killing himself farming and working two full time jobs. Grew up hanging out at dairy and poultry farms and loved it. Went to a land grant ag school. Majored in animal husbandry and minored in horticulture. I'm no expert on anything, but I know something about a lot of things. Got my real education living in the outdoors. The Sourland Mts of New Jersey was my true school. Worked in horticulture for three years and then got an animal care related job which made everything else possible. Through a stroke of luck, I was able to retire early. The best part of early retirement was that I no longer had to hire staff. Over my 25 year tenure in animal care, it became harder and harder to hire people who were willing to get their hands dirty. Once there were no more farm raised kids, there was no good help for my industry. I see my grandchildren drifting in the same direction. They are interested in Pa's animals and projects, but I think it's only because they love me. Once I am gone, their interests will wane. This saddens me. Misinformation is rampant. I can only hope that logic and common sense will prevail. When I married my wife I promised her That we would always have food and a place to live-these things I know that I can provide. The future generations?

Please be advised that I'm neither or a Luddite nor back-to-nature hippie--most of whom would have starved to death if they hadn't outgrown the phase. I am, for a 72-year old, fairly tech savvy having an iphone, GPS, DishNet, DVR that I can program and even a GPS for the golf course that tells me how far I am from the green. I just purchased the 13th in a continuing line of computers with Windows-7 and am all over the Internet. While I certainly would miss this stuff, I am glad it is available since, for me, at least it makes life easier. I think it's overdone and my cell is never turned on unless I need to make a call or am expecting a returned one.

I was an excellent wing shot with my trusty 16-pump but quit hunting when my last Springer died. I still, on occasion, fish but loss of control of two of my fingers on each hand do to Dupuytren’s contracture makes it tough to tie flies on a leader. As I point out on my BYC page, I used to raise chicken(an ducks) for meat but do to the the fact that no one else in the family cared to help process them, gave it up about 15 yrs ago. Thus most of my meat comes packaged from the super market. It is just that I also have a lot of skills that allow me to do things that will help people keep and grow their own food. That is the knowledge that I see as dying out in the general population.

Evidence of this is the horror expressed by most urbanites of the thought, much less the sight, of someone actually killing poultry for meat. Likewise they condemn, sight unseen, the keeping of chickens and other poultry as being smelling and noisy yet seem to ignore the smell and sound of their own pollution. (Locally the waste management facility, aka the sewer plant, smells far worse than any poultry house I've ever been in. Interestingly the town limits chicken keeping in spite of the fact that 9 our of 10 pre1950 built houses have coops in the back yard.) My wife and I are always appalled at the fact that many places prohibit hang laundry outside. What better, cheaper, less energy conservative method could there be? I guess they don't want to see people's underwear on the line but it's okay to see it if people are wearing it in plan sight in WalMart.

edit to DVR--sent the last VCR to be recycled long ago--anyone want some VCR tapes?

I feel like I'm letting my forefathers down. My parents were farmers, as well as their parents, & their parents. I just have a small farm & I'm a ranch hand on someone elses place. I SO wish I could do it like they did, self sufficient. It seems next to impossible in todays world.

We'll have to introduce you to a lovely invention called a DVR. It blows away those VCRs...

(Do they still make vcr's other than DVD/VCR combos?)

I change the post to reflect my upgrade--I actually have a DVR recorder that plays DVD's and CD's through my 52 inch HDTV. And, yes, you can still get the combos as a matter of fact I have one in the attic just in case I want to play one of our old VCR tapes. I also have an 8-track player in case they ever come back. My DW hates it when some new gadget come out because she knows that sooner, rather than later, I'll have one.
