Okay, so my aussie that's been squatting laid her first egg yesterday afternoon. However, nothing today. Just wondering how long before she settles into her normal laying routine? The brown one is the aussie's, the white one is a store bought for comparison.

I thought getting my first egg was a big deal. Clearly the big deal will be getting the SECOND egg. It's been 9 days since my 6 1/2 month old Silkie laid the first one....

Congratulations on your first egg! You'll probably get your second egg within a week or so. They usually won't lay every day when they first get started, it can take them a little while to settle into a normal laying pattern. Give her a month or so and she should start getting into a routine.

Ok, so no egg yesterday but there was one today! However, it looks a little bigger and is a slightly different color, plus the first one was spotted. Could that be from one of the other aussies that is ready or would the first egg layer's vary for a while?

The one on the left is the first one and today's is on the right.

I agree.

Congrats!

Oh! This is good to know because my Cochin laid her 1st egg yesterday too! But no egg today and I was very worried she laid it elsewhere since she free ranges. Congrats!

My thoughts exactly!

With mine, their first egg was always smaller than the second. They will get bigger over time, and color may vary some, but the shape generally stays about the same for each chicken. I think it's neat how each hen has her own egg shape. The differences can be subtle sometimes, but I can usually tell which girl laid which egg.
