I Gotta ask How did you ladies and gents decide on your chickens names

My first two were named when I got them...the kids at school named them Tom and Jerry. I renamed them after Red Sox players: Jerry Remy, a Bl/Wh Leghorn mix and Tom Brunanski, an EE.
My second two my DS named during his Yu-Gi-Oh phase: Slifer the Sky Dragon, a Light Brahma/Leghorn mix and Obelisk the Tormentor, a Bl/White Leghorn mix.
My last bird was Miss MoneyPenny, a Silkie/Cochin mix. I got to name her!
I got to name other people's birds before I ever got to name my own.

I named my Production Reds Lucy and Ethel and my Black Australorps Oprah and Aretha. As they are growing and their feathers are changing , they are getting hard to tell apart. I have to look at the BA's beaks, and so far Lucy is a bit larger than Ethel. She was always the first to try new things! She can also squawk the loudest!

We named our new Turken, Elvira. After I told DD that Turkens hail from Transylvania, we just HAD to pick a "scary" name. If she turns out to be a roo, the name will be "Vlad."
You can see Elvira at www.chickschicks.blogspot.com
Our other chicks have pretty names: Helena, Catherine, Buffy...

As a rule they don't get names but rules are made to be broken.

Lucky. Lucky is lucky to be alive. Helped it hatch.

Little Rooster. More a description than a name because we have a big rooster also.

Dumb and Dumber. The two pekin ducks that I was given after Easter. Boy the people that buy chicks and ducks for Easter gifts and then can't care for them properly.

Girls. All the hens. And the beagle that adopted us.

My daughter wanted to name on of hers "Pecker", because she pecked at everything ` we were like ~ uhh... no hun, how about something else..." Then that same chicken kept on going for any rings that we wore, so she officially became ~Golom~.

We also have a Buff Orp named nugget, cuz she's a nugget of gold, also a tasty chicken mcnugget.

I've usually gone with names that fit with their color like Ruby, Rosy, Scarlett. I also like old fashioned names. I named my 4 Dutch chicks (Barnevelders and Welsummers) after my Dutch ancestors; Wilhelmina, Anna, Pieternella and Carrie. The three roos I hatched were named Primo-because he was first (also was DH's grandfather's name), Olive (named by DS because the chick was grey and slimy like an Olive.) Olive is now Oliver. The third is George because he hatched on George Washington's birthday. I have 7 other new chicks who are slowly being named as the names come to me. One just did, I now have a BO named Nutmeg.

I've owned two BRs and both, hens mind you, have never been called anything but Rocky. Go figure.
The ducks were named Spotty and Quackers by my 6 year old son. Spotty had a spot on his head as a baby. And Quackers turned out to be a female so she does quack!

Some get names by a physical trait. "Notch" is missing a notch from 1 of her wattles. "Broke Toes" had both of her inner toes broke and they are now turned. "Chitter Butt", well he just never shuts up. "Old Hefty" was 5 years old and over weight, she was just Hefty when younger. "Oreo" was a mottled mutt.

Some get names based on lineage. "Baby Hefty" is Hefty's daughter. "Little Oreo" is Oreo's daughter, and "Baby Oreo" is Oreo's granddaughter.

Some by circumstances. "Dot" was raised with standards are just looked like a dot running around in there. "Cousin" was the runt barred rock pullet I seperated out with Dot, so he didn't get hurt. "Half Pint" was raised in a brooder full of standards.

Some by looks. When "Snickers" was a baby she looked like a snickers bar without chocolate. BTW: "Caramel" and "Nougat" are Snicker's daughters and "Peanut" is her grandaughter from Caramel.

Attitude is also a way to name. "Hateful" was a mean Barred Rock hen that I used to have. "Friendly" is a very sweet cockerel that I am looking for a home for. "Sassy", "Hissy", and "Fit" are loud standard Buff Cochins that are spoiled rotten and want everything their way.
