I hate turkey vultures...

The key here is "helpless"--unless an adult chicken were trapped or injured I doubt very much that it would fall prey to a vulture. These birds are just not equipped to catch live prey--no way no how. If you think they are, I suggest you look for another source of the attack that may be leaving the chicken "helpless" so the vulture would be finishing the job.

I do think it is illegal in most states. I use rock salt or dry loads for them and hawks. It might be a hawk. The best way to solve a hawk is a rooster. A rooster will solve both hawk and vulture. Rode island reds and Brahamas are my favorite. Ours have kept the hawks away from the ranch.

I beg to differ but vultures do often eat more than carrion, 'specially the black buzzurds. They will and do kill and eat just born lambs, calves and goat kids. They first peck the eyes out and while some distract the mother the others continue the carnage. My dad has had to submit a form to the fed's for compensation after losing several calves before. He also was warned that it is a federal offense to shoot them. So, we are not allowed legally to protect what is ours.... probably comes as no great surprise to most of us!

Look it up people if its your livestock you can protect it. If its a eagle you can shoot it. Dont know about going that far but you can shoot or kill almost anything that is killing off your livestock.
