I have a couple of chicks I need help identifying, both came from TSC

I'll go with the Wellies or LBLH on #1, both are good looking birds when they're grown. #2 kinda looks like my Leghorn when she was a chick, but there are to many breeds close to that color.

They are pretty identical to my EEs from McMurray - my buff/white one started just like that 0 yellow/buff fuzz with two darker gold stripes on the back. The chipmunk one could be EE or Brown Leghorn or probably others... I am a newbie too, but those pics look very similar to mine.

bad news to report. I lost 11 out of 44 this evening. My brood pen failed. I have never experienced the kind of weather we had today with that particular pen so I didnt know. With regular rain it hasn't leaked and the chicks were fine. Basically the thing flooded. Anyway I am very upset about it and mad at myself for not being able to get them out of it in time. I injured my back sunday working in the yard and can barely walk as it is. Most of the younger birds that I had gotten from TSC seem to be doing fine but the RIRs my father picked up for me didnt do so well. They were larger birds I would have thought they would have weathered a little better. I got this brood box from him and at first I thought it was pretty good but now I see its flaws so as soon as I am able I am gonna build a new one. Hopefully the rest of the birds will make it. Sorry to share bad news I just needed to say it.

We are still under flash flood warnings, probably will have river flooding for the next few days. My prayers go out to other folks in my area in hopes that they are spared losses of any kind.

To HenMama2: those are some sweet little chicks you have, hope they do well.

1st one reminds me of either a Brown Leghorn or a Golden Laced Wyandotte. Second one seems to have a tiny dash of red in it to me like a Golden Sex Link, but could be a white leghorn.

Wow Wes, I'm so sorry about your brooder tragedy. What a terrible thing to have happened.

I'm thinking the brown one looks like a brown leghorn. I couldn't tell if the yellow one's wings are coming in buff or white. It's hard to see in the picture. I'm leaning towards white, though. Maybe leghorns? I hope you'll keep us posted while they grow up.

Welcome to BYC! Sounds like you're going to fit in great here.

Thanks... as of right now I am still awake and watchin over the survivors. I havent lost any more. 4 or 5 hours ago I woulda thought half of them wasn't gonna make it. They seem to be doing way better than I woulda given them credit for. Odd that one scrawny chick which I woulda bet money on kickin the bucket seems to be pullin through. I did all that I knowed to do I guess it is up to that which has way more power than me. Well, sounds stupid but dont discount a hair dryer when it comes to wet chicks. And dont think fiberglass panels will keep rain out when it is poppin lightnin and the wind is blowin 40 mph either. New brooder is gonna be made from solid wood with turned down vent holes. I am thinking of engineering some kind of forced venting system using those pop open clothes dryer ducts to prevent water intrusion. I understand water heater thermostats are reasonable as well. Tonight was rough, gave me a lot to think about. Hmmm, these little guys make it it wont be long untill tropical storm season arrives... just another trial.

Thanks,

Wes

Wes,

I'm new on here but I just want to pass on my sympathy. I can't imagine what you've been thru. Right now we have our chicks and ducklings in our basement.

Our goats, however, are in the front pasture with nothing but a tarp covered quonset hut. It's plenty for them in North Carolina, but I keep thinking myself, what happens during hurricane season.

Well now I've just added my chicks to that list.

As a new farmer, I have to wonder what do farmers do when a Hurricane strikes? I can just see me in the basement with 4 goats and 11 chickens and what ducks I can convince to come out of the cold??? And if I get cows???? It will be years before we get a true barn built..

I wish you luck in your new brooder building. And I'll say a little prayer for the ones that are left.

Laney

I dont know Laney... I lived in Charleston for 3 years and luckily we didn't get hit. Most of my civilian life has been spent right here in south Alabama and with the exception of last year we seem to get some kind of action every season. Cows seem to not get too awful upset about it from what I have seen. I have never had any birds during bad weather until lately. I would imagine that the stormy weather is really bad on them. Part of the reason some of my chicks didn't make it I think is because the lightnin scared them and they bunched up and some ended up on the bottom of the pile and being stood on... you get the picture. Luckily hurricanes are somewhat predictable and you do get a little warning with them. Maybe you could put together some kind of small cinderblock bird bunker with a sturdy roof? doesnt have to be big, just a good solid roof and maybe an elevated floor so water wont get them. Or do like I did my chicks, they are in a dog kennel right now. Kinda like temporary lodging until the bad weather clears.

Unfortunately another round is coming in tonight and tomorrow. We are expecting a 45% chance of tornadic activity from each storm cell. Kinda like the day of the one that went through Enterprise High School. I saw 2 on the way to work and drove into and got hit by a third smaller one. That day was a bad day indeed. Had I been maybe 5 minutes earlier I would have been in the middle of the one that hit that school. Of course my worries go out for those kids. That tornado is still fresh on many folks minds. Tomorrow is gonna be bad. With all of the flooding and now severe weather too. I just dont know.

since we all like pics..

These are the little survivors. I know they are packed but it is far better than being outside in the bad weather(they aren't packed as the birds in one of my friends chicken barns

). Even with my brooder modifications I dont want to chance it at this point. Oh yea, I only lost 9 so it wasnt as bad as I thought. Still bad but glad it wasnt worse.

Anyway, I been typin a lot so now time to read a bit and go to bed.
