I have a question about what causes a thread to get locked?

We relly do need to think about what we are posting before we do so. I think that insulting remaks or judgements should not happen but I see it all the time. Sometimes I think it is friends joking with one another but other people don't always know your joking when rude statements are made or name calling.
Lets try to be nice to one another!!!!!

People are bound to be offended by certain topics and not others; and every single one of us have offended others on the board without trying. That's the problem. Some people simply have thin skin and there's no preventing them from taking offense at something.

If you find something to be against the rules, in your judgement, then report it. Someone will look at it and make the decision. If they disagree, then no action is taken. If no action is taken, simply do not read the thread again. If you feel you are being insulted or offended, why go back and back and continue to read the thread?

Move along. There are plenty of of posts to read here to keep you occuppied. :0

greyfields..i have no problem with you..i actually enjoy your posts...but, what you just said wasnt the point at all...sure, i or he can "move along" to another post...but thats kinda harsh to say..sorry..and..no, i dont have thin skin..its not about that....its about being respectful of peoples problems....just like fat people dont wanna get called fat(and yeah, i'm fat)..people with spelling/grammar problems dont wanna hear it either(yet, nothing is done)....so, as i said earlier..why is it okay sometimes in certain circumstances...but not in others....

ahh!..you know what?..forget it..LOL..some things are just hopeless...

....i withdraw this thread...i see its useless sometimes to try to take a stand for what you believe is right....

x2 greyfields!

We're supposed to deal out advice to one another on the forum, not insults. If you want to gripe like that guy did you need to go to a different forum/website other than this one. I'm surprised the thread wasn't locked sooner since it was getting way out of hand way too quickly. I was going to post a reply stating that we'd better cool it or the moderators were gonna lock it, but when I tried to reply the topic had been closed. I know that as a moderator it's totally within your discretion as to when and if a thread gets locked & while others may not feel it should or should not have been locked, it's simply your choice not ours to make that decision. Just want to say good job moderators!

When it's iffy, then we discuss it behind the scenes.

do you have a "Staff Room", a forum that is hidden to everyone except staff members? Just curious.

I felt like I was ghost writing / reading my own post there! You've obviously done this before as you are SPOT ON with those comments!

We are VERY blessed here at BYC to have an incredibly diverse group as our staff. We are all very different people with very different points of view and we don't always agree (which is perfect!).

Why is it perfect? Well, in situations that are in the gray area we discuss it and if the majority of the staff feel something is inappropriate, it probably is (and vice versa, sometimes we all don't see any problems with a post).

Redhen, you asked, "how will i KNOW i crossed the line?...when i get booted?...."

We never ban anyone without very good reason and rarely without giving the person PLENTY of advanced notice they are on thin ice. The only time we ban first, ask questions later is if the member is brand new and breaking rules left and right with their first posts.

Regarding where the line is drawn: It is easy for stuff like adult posts, spam, etc. It is MUCH more difficult with gray area items, which goes back to the comment above about the staff as a whole coming to a decision.

Regarding standing up for something and discussing on these topics: We as staff value the opinions of our members (which are always diverse and often conflicting with those of other members) and listen to everything that is said. Will we always agree with something someone is "standing for", of course not. Will we respect members that want to help the community, respect the community, the rules, and the staff? Absolutely!

Bottom line is the staff does the best we can with the information and resources available. Fortunately, we hear time and time again, especially from those that have any experience running a community, that we're doing a stellar job... and I know our great staff are doing just that.

Thanks everyone for the great discussion and feedback, we appreciate it!

thanks Nifty..you DO do a great job!.. i just had/have a concern..thats all.. and i wanted to see how some others felt aslo..thanks to all who chimed in to help express my thoughts..

RedHen get Mozilla Firefox loaded onto your computer. It will give your son the freedom to go where ever he wants and show him his errors right in the post window. Correcting them there is easy and it will gradually give him the confidence to go other places too.

I'm an atrocious speller, always have been, and a bad at typing too, but getting way better due to Moz showing my errors all the time and then getting them corrected easy. I grew up in the time when they told you to look it up in the dictionary if you did not know how to spell it, well Duh! How do you look it up if you don't have a clue how to spell it?!? The computer age is really way more helpful, spell it like it sounds and the computer will find it for you, and if your not sure that is the right word copy it to google and it will give you a definition.

I used to use Word to compose and copy into the post window, what a pain, this is so much better.
