Could you possibly post pics of the mis-shapen eggs here? I had no clue a respiratory illness could cause odd looking eggs. Would certainly be helpful for future reference. So sorry...I know that is just heartbreaking.

I would recommend taking a bird or two (live) for a necropsy before doing something so drastic. Confirmation from a licensed vet would be more appropriate for a situation like this. Try your state vet first. If all else fails, contact a local university with a science dept - they will do them for the sake of education.

I just consulted the Health Handbook. It does say survivors are permanently immune, but become carriers. It also says it is easily destroyed on surfaces by disinfectants. Hens return to production in 6-8 weeks, but may never produce the same quantity or quality of eggs. Steff, I really want you to just be sure what they have before you destroy your entire flock over this.

I think that you are right with culling your flock. And before you get anymore, disinfect everything.

You REALLY need to get a vet to do some blood work or at least a Necropsy to determine that it is indeed IB before you start killing your flock.

Respiratory problems could be anything, and maybe your younger birds could have something else besides IB. Aren't there other diseases that could also cause misshapen or wrinkled eggs?

I am very interested in all this info as I occasionally have eggs laid that are slightly misshapen. They look like the pictures in the Merck article but not nearly so wrinkled. However, none of my chickens show any other signs of this illness. Their egg production hasn't fallen, their are no signs of colds in my birds.

What are other reasons for misshapened eggs? My chickens have 24/7 access to oyster shell, they have 24/7 access to layer pellets or flock raiser and free range most every day.
