I have to talk POLISH!

Split refers to a bird who carries one allele of a recessive gene/trait. In other words, they carry it but don't show it, and that's the only difference between the "split" and the real one.

So, a Tolbunt split is a Gold Laced Polish who carries mottling (the white tips) but not 100%, thus, you can't see it.

A Lavender Split for another example is a black bird who carries Lavender but doesn't show it, for Lavender is simply a diluted (from the lav) black.

But in another example of differing and recognizing "splits" - my WCB x Tolbunts aren't splits. They carry the mottling and don't show it, but that's just part of the difference

They're also carrying only half the lacing gene, columbian gene, darkbrown gene, crowwing, etc. Big difference, making the bird not a split. A split is the same as the normal, but with the recessive part of the normal not showing up visually.

I haven't seen Polish pick on eachother, I've had 2 roos. I would separate them. Maybe when he gets his roo behavior together, he'll be putting them in their place-at some point. I know my hens were always chasing my Polish girls away, so they hid in the woods all the time. Now they have their own home.

The polish hen doesn't beat on him. Th get along fine. At the point they are separated just the 2 of them. In the spring I will get some polish chicks and maybe in the fall they call all live together happily ever after I hope........

Depends.

My girls from McMurray Hatchery are nearly every-day layers at 3 years old, but like ALL my Polish, will molt w/out production for months.

My girls from other assorted hatcheries are either unreliable (sold most) or just as good as previously mentioned.

My non-hatchery girls and hatchery x non-hatchery are only 1 year old or less, but so far lay EVERY day.

I swear I can't keep a polish. Today I lost my almost 3 week old White Crested Blue Cuckoo chick that we hatche out from Revolutionmama's eggs.
