I have to talk POLISH!

Some of my Polish are shy and others are all over me

The shy ones have come around with handling. This is a wonderful and fun breed

Illia, when am I going to see some of those project buff Ameraucanas? I just hatched four buff x wheaten chicks and I plan on posting pictures of them on the Ameraucana thread

I'm still trying to catch up after my short absence, so I'll post some photos in the Ameraucana thread soon. Sadly though the photos I post will be all. I'm not doing the Buffs anymore (

) but I do have some Wheaten x Buffs right now, and may actually use them for a different project. We had to cut back a lot here, and the Buffs was a choice I had to make; them or my other Am project.

I have about 20 current Polish, some from show lines, some from rare color/non-show/non-hatchery, and some from several different hatcheries. Yes there are a couple skittish and dumb or even weak ones I've run across, didn't keep em, but most of my gals are very friendly, very intelligent, and very independent, strong characters. They're super foragers, super fliers, and love chasing cats.

As for males, Polish vary greatly, yes. Hatchery ones are in most cases either aggressive or flighty. Non-hatchery ones are often either very friendly, normal guys or not the toughest.

Ditto on the climbing. I've got one who gets sooo jealous if someone else is hogging my lap or shoulders, and gets pretty pushy too.

Pictures of your Polish!

Are they all LF?

Too bad about the buffs

It is a beautiful color, but those green eggs are a problem
hmm.png

I only had one girl with greenish eggs. My main rooster came from blue egg lines, and all my Wheatens for the outcrossing were some rich layers. Honestly through my short time of personal experience and decent time researching them, egg color was a minor issue. But, yes, too bad.

Pics of the Polish? - Littered around the forum.

I'll get some new ones tomorrow though. I've got a new cockerel on the block, and my Tolbunt boys have changed drastically since their latest molt. It's weird, really. The smooth boy has a lower tail angle and a bigger/fuller crest. Don't know how, but I like it!

They're all LF. Not a bantam fan.

Really! What blue egg line is that? Ramey? My 2 girls are from eggs I bought from Meredith. Jean's eggs were just as green as his. I think their type is very nice. What would you say is the biggest problem with the buffs?

Awww, too bad your Polish are all LF. I love my bantams. Only bantam breed I own. All my other birds are LF. I will look forward to seeing pictures. I do love your Tolbunts and am tempted to add them to my flock

Polish pics!

So, I've got two pure Tolbunt males. One is smooth, one is frizzled. The smooth guy has always flaunted his flaws to me for over a year now and although I love him, they irk me. Guess what happened? He molted, and suddenly - He's got a bigger, fuller crest, smaller comb, and better posture. How'd that happen? Here he is now in all his manliness, looking out for his kaleidoscope of hens. his crest has been trimmed though; it was fuller in front than this. I've had a couple hawk fly-by's and want him to be able to see perfectly well for the next possible encounter.

And yes, that's the frizzle on the left. I've trimmed his crest back entirely. I know, it's not exactly something to brag about, but he's at the bottom of the pecking order among the two boys, and his crest is very full and gets dirty a lot unlike the smooth, so, I cut it all back. To me he's more important because of his lack of flaws, but he's less dominant, so there's a greater chance of him getting stolen. Would hate to see that happen.

Here's a nice side-by-side of Gold Laced vs Silver Laced. The silver laced is my only silver girl left these days, and she's at 3 years old. Each year she gets more white in her crest, but this year she's got none. This latest molt has done good for quite a few birds here.

My only Buff Laced. She came from a sex-linked breeding done by a (sort of) neighbor. She's technically half Buff Laced. She's a hatchery girl, so she's a little on the small side, but regardless if I'll keep some offspring or not, she's already a great pet

She talks. A lot. again, trimmed crest shown. the butt in the photo is the same as in the other photo on the left, and from a tolbunt x wcb. Controversial cross, yes.

43214_zpolish3.jpg

Small array, from White Crested Black to Gold Laced to Houdan x Gold Laced to Tolbunt. And a beautiful Blue Partridge Brahma butt. The Houdan cross is showing off a nice body but a rather pinched look to her tail. She's got a lesser tail than most here, but it normally isn't that pinched.

My youngest Polish this year, offspring of my frizzled Tolbunt x WCB. This girl is special to me, as she's my only current frizzle daughter I have. My frizzled male is my only Tolbunt with cavernous nostrils. Imagine that - A Polish without such.

One of my 3 yr old White Crested Blacks. This is a better winter day here

It's either - "I'm melting!"

Or - "I'm molting!"

No Tolbunt split photos yet, haven't gotten a good enough one. Sadly though I sold my last a little while ago because I was displeased with the lacing quality. I have two Gold Laced hens, one with poor lacing but better tail, the other with good lacing but squirrel tail. Sadly haven't gotten any from the better hen to live past 2 weeks old though. The last little trio died after poor care from three competitive broody hens.
