Have a quick question for everyone. I have a mixed laying flock (well, they are not laying YET, but should be by fall) of different breeds. I have 9 girls and 1 boy, I am planning on adding the pullets of my hatch to this group once they grow out more. My silkie hen will be with them in the grow out pen as she is a good adoptive mommy and is sitting on a few eggs with the same hatch date. Have you had problems integrating polish chickens in to a mixed flock due to the "poof" and that they look different? I have a nice size coop and large run and they free range when the weather is nice and I am home (usually a few days a week and after i get home frome work) would i be better off putting them together with the silkie there to help protect them so they can all get used to each other before the poofs really grow in, or just do the introductions like I did with others using the dog crate in the coop? All of my hens are pretty laid back. My main roo is a Speckled sussex and he can be a bit aggressive with new chickens. he likes to show his authority and keep them all in line.... Just trying to prepare for any possible problems. Any tips or info would be much appreciated.
