I have to talk POLISH!

i have a SL polish hen and she is 4 weeks and her crest is all black will it ever tern back and white
SL Polish are suppose to have silver laced crests. Do you mean laced black and white ? All birds have color changed in their feathers as they grow to maturity. The laced Polish have improved lacing if they were developed from parents with propter lacing. Only time will tell.

Are Red Crested Red Polish recognized? I have what I believe is a cockerel and I might keep him. I was going to show him in 4-H. Are Polish roosters friendly? Mine is a standard and I am worried he will over mate my bantam hens. Also, I know roosters are loud, but how loud are the Polish roos?

WelI don't know about the red standard. I do know roos. I have 5. One only crows in the morning like a good boy. One crows all day long. One crows when he feels like it. One is really quiet(low man in the group). The last crows all day and night. No kidding 11pm, 2am, he does not care. If it was not for the fact that he is such a good roo he would be a goner! It depends on the roo is what I am saying. They are loud but not to the point that I can't sleep through them. Now my guinea are a whole other story! LOUD!!!

I am new to the breed, chickens in general. I have 6 golden polish. I don't know what gender they are yet for sure but i am guessing 3 hens 3 roos. They are about 3 months or so old. They are just now getting their head crest, waddles, tail feathers. Some look kinda pitiful, my older-bigger ones have pecked some almost bare on their backs. About a month ago I transfered them to the big coop with the big ones. I have a section in the big coop that the babies and bantams can get into without the big ones following them. But the chasing and pecking is getting much better, no one has lost any body fluids over the transition, just feathers.

My questions are how big will they get, what color of eggs will they lay, how big will there eggs be, will they lay well-go broody. How is the easiest way to tell who lays what eggs. My older girls should be laying anytime now, the babies about Oct-that is what I am guessing at least. I would like to let them hatch some eggs next spring. For now I want to let them get in the groove of the laying thing.

I am so excited that I found a specific breed thread. The polish and ee's are the only breed specific ones I have. The older ones are mostly red production. Any info on the breed is welcomed, like I said I am new and want to learn everything I can!!!

I'll post pics soon...

That is not an accepted color for bantam or large fowl

Welcome Arkansas81!

Ok to start off there is bantam and standard. I have standards and they are close to a foot tall. I have not measured them. The eggs are white. Since mine are new to laying the eggs are between med to large. They lay almost every day for me. I live in Texas. I had them when I was young and they are not very broody. We had 2 silkies just for broody time. We watch ours to start showing interest in the nest box, Wattles to drop and turn red and then we pen the one we think is laying if we can't catch her in the act.

Hope it helps!

thanks rosewolf. yes that does help. as far as i know i have the standard, but ive been surprised before. we ordered them thru our local co-op from ideal. they all have been sooo healthy, lively and an absolute joy. i would recommend ideal poultry at anytime. one of the golden laced has her hairdo, but it is coming in with some white feathers throughout her hair. Her body is black and gold, the others are all gold and black.

ive done some research to try to determine what gender they are, what ive been told is if the head feathers are nice and round-uniformed-should be female. if the head feathers are wild and crazy-like a mohawk then probably roo. i cant go by tail feathers and back feathers right now they were almost picked bald by my bigger ones.

if i am remembering correctly 2 have started showing waddles, but not very big. they are REALLY bright red tho. like i said i think we have 3 hens, 3 roos. thats not the ratio that i wanted but i have come to terms with having more roos than i wanted. they all get along tho so as long as they play nice we will keep them all.

again thanks for the info, we are enjoying watching them grow. they are so gentle and sweet, they come running when we come into the coop, rub against our legs, even sit on my feet when i am trying to walk.

i am so anxious to start getting eggs!

Hey everyone! With all the experience on this site, you all must have some good input on quarantine for new birds and show birds. Please stop over to the quarantine thread that I started and share your tips and cautions. Folks have been asking me what signs to look for in a bird that would indicate illness, disease, parasites etc. Other folks have PM'd me asking what kind of "treatments" or precautions should be taken with new birds, ie. treat for cocci. worms etc?

Please lend a hand with this issue...

If you have multiple roosters with your hens they do have a tendency to "overmate" the hens. It is kinda like a contest especially if you have only a few hens. They can get to the point that they wear the hens down pretty quick cause they can sometimes be overaggressive in breeding.
I like your red Polish...I have been looking for over 6 months for one. Though they are not a standard color crest they are very useful in breeding projects. Where did you get yours? I believe that they only accepted solid crests are the white crested polish..is that correct NoseyChickens??
