I heard that people use Apple Cider Vinegar in their chicken water?

I use it because, well, just because.
A little dollop in their 3 gallon waterer a couple of times a week. I add a little bit of probiotic powder once in a while too.
They also get fresh oregano, thyme, parsley and rosemary. I am hoping what I am doing has some health benefits for them. You can find opinions that say it does---Perdue now adds oregano to the diets of their chickens so there must be something to that one, anyway.
I have no idea whether what I am doing is making any difference in their development or health but, with the exception of the loss of a sweet runty 8-week-old, so far so good.
Don't add ACV to a metal waterer as it will corrode the metal. I have also read that it's not a good idea to use it in hot weather so I stopped doing that during the summer.
A little article on using herbs---looks like Perdue has done some studies, which makes sense considering the size of their operation:

ACV HAS EXCELLENT HEALTH benefits to your chickens, it is a natural internal parasait/ dewormed and it has vitamins in it too. Just adding a bit to the water does all that. The chickens don't mind it, some even drink more water because of the added flavor. I only give it 2 a week in the water. Way worth the small investment! ☺

Nice hype BUT not true...
There may be traces of vitamins in ACV but not enough to account for anything.
There are a few minerals mostly potassium and phosphorous.
Also ACV does nothing as a wormer, that is all just a sales pitch.

Looking at the few apple cider vinegar posts here - questioning it's use with chickens... and being 'new' to BYC... I'm hesitant to chime in... but I'm just so happy to see that ACV is given in the water for the chickens by some folks! I'm a huge fan of ACV for myself... but the apple cider vinegar must contain "the mother" for the best results... "The mother" in a nutshell, is another word for probiotics... (which - when injested, helps build immunity, improves gut health and all sorts of other great benefits). So, why not put a little Tbsp in the chicken's gallon of fresh water too!!! It's good for my family... it should be good for the chicks! haha... "What's good for the goose is good for the gander?" kinda thing maybe? haha!

There is no scientific proof that apple cider vinegar or any other vinegar for that matter has any benefits for your chickens.

It is like the 1960s elephant jokes.

Why do elephants wear red tennis shoes?

So the elephant can hide in a strawberry patch.

That's stupid I never saw an elephant hiding in a strawberry patch?

See, it works!!!!

I heard that one coming...goose and gander

Hahha yes, very true ChickenGeorgeto!!! There is no distinct proof... that's true. I like your elephant analogy... haha... that was good! But apple cider vinegar - especially ACV containing "the mother' has actually undergone fermentation... and it is proven- that the fermentation process actually forms health-promoting probiotics and enzymes & these are contained in it. Using it - is not for everyone certainly.... I was just curious because of the research I've done on the use of ACV for myself & my family... I like to explore organic, natural options and preventative measures for good health, and ferment a lot of my own foods for my family and such... and enjoy it... and was curious if it would work for chickens too!
