I just set more silkie eggs...due Dec. 21...anyone else want to play?

First of all buy a standard of perfection. That will detail exactly what you should be looking for. As for shows, get a subscription to the Poultry Press. It lists all the upcoming ones as well as results. Lots of sites with pics but until you really get your feet wet showing, its hard to describe all the faults to look for. I've been very lucky to have 2 master breeders in the ASBC to guide me. The one is now in charge of the NSBA and wins at most national shows. I learn something new everytime I get to talk to them. It also helps to just talk to judges after the shows. Tell them you are learning and to walk you through why they placed a class as such. Possibly get ahold of your state rep and have them help. I've taken many people out to our farm and spent hours answering questions. Just getting good birds is only half of the battle, conditioning them for the show ring is the other challenge.

Oops... I forgot to add that is you join the ASBC, there is a member's area. It has its own forum, calendar of events, for sale section, etc. It would be another good way to find shows in your area.

Awesome, thanks so much! I really appreciate the help

Woo Hoo I'm in! I have 2 dozen silkie eggs from the absolute best stock in the country.....so I'm excited for it to go well! I have most under my adorable reliable silkie broody hen "Hazel" and 4 under a new broody pullet "Pansy" (not the brightest chicken, but sweet, don't know if she'll do it right) and a few in the incubator since not all fit under my size small girls. Fingers crossed for a CHRISTMAS DAY HATCH!!!!!!

Good luck everyone!

Now that all our eggs have arrived we have 4 hatch dates...21, 22, Christmas Eve&Christmas Day!!! So exciting! Got the new flashlight too so hopefully we'll have better luck when we check on everyone this weekend.

Well the worst has happened.... a freak windstorm and power out for 24 hours!!!!!! I am sure I lost some as I had to get the ones that were in the incy, and decide which to squeeze under my broody (she's small and has so many under there already she looks all spread out wide!) A few had to be sacrified for the good of all. Darnit. I tried to choose the ones that looked like bad air cells to sacrifice. But it's so early to tell....
Anyone else out there have alot of experience with shipped eggs?? Mine always look like burst air cells and weird bubbles upon early candling. I've heard to put those in an egg carton large end up to incubate; a moot point right now but for next time I want to know...) Anyone?
Big hugs to my faithful little silkie hen Hazel who takes as many eggs as I give her, even when she isn't feeling broody; and always makes good choices and is a great mom....

hopefully she saved the day...

Aww so sorry to hear that

We lost power during the snow here the other night but thankfully not for long. I too am dealing with shipped eggs...can't really offer up much advice since I don't know how mine are going to turn out, just figured I'd offer some support! Mine are in the turner after having rested for the 8-12hrs like they say then I was told to move them to the hatcher and place them inside of the bottom part of pulp egg cartons. Hoping for the best for both of us! Good luck!

I candled all my eggs. The buff orps from my hen and rooster are developing. I am excited about those because I raised the roo and hen from chicks. The 24 shipped silkies I am hatching to sell are doing great--only 2 out of the 24 looked questionable. But the 9 eggs I got for myself don't look good. One of them I poked a hole in just trying to write the number on it. I put wax on it but whenI candle it it looks very porous and I can't see in. A ot of the others don't seem to be doing anything. I haven't thrown any out yet though.
