We have a terrible rat problem. They seem to be building tunnels all over our yard around the pens. i shot one last month at dusk, sneaking into another pen. But this morning i went out to find one in with two of my Showgirls, in broad daylight(!). One Showgirl was on a nest in the hutch. The other one, Twinkle, was fussing like crazy. Then i saw it and screamed. Eeeek!
So i grabbed my rifle (pump action pellet gun) and waited. Saw his little head poke out from under our shed and shot. Got him in the head and he collapsed, but then sprung to life and whipped out and around. i managed to get the single-shot rifle loaded again and shot him again, and that did him in. i hate rats, but honestly don't want a critter to suffer anymore than necessary.
What's interesting about rats is that they have the ability to restart their hearts. i read that in the instructions for my rat zapper (which the rats refuse to go into). So that explains why, in both instances when i shot them, they initially fell over, then reanimated.
i did buy a Daisy Powerline 15-shot BB CO2 repeater pistol with a laser sight, red dot scope, and mini flashlight attachment a couple weeks ago (overkill for rat shooting, i'm sure). But i need to practice with it before trying to actually use it.
Anyhow, just wanted to share.
