I do wonder if she will miss free ranging. She is used to roaming wherever she wants, and I don't do free ranging at all here because of the predators, so I'm hoping she won't mind too much to being confined. But it's a large run and there's plenty of room, just not actual "foraging".

I couldn't in good conscience, keep her and not tell him, but neither could I just send her back home where she would surely have been eaten within the week. It's strange how doing the right thing feels sad, but I plan to send over her eggs with little notes that say "From Henrietta" etc, and I'm hoping he'll be satisfied with his decision in the long run.

Henrietta is a beautiful girl. So glad it turned out well. She's getting along so well w/ your other chickens that it seems as if it was meant to be..
Sticking a "Thank You" note in with the eggs might go a long way towards smoothing over any awkward "rough edges" with your neighbor, and might help you feel better as well. Just tell him how beautiful she is and that you are so happy to have her, and that he can come over to visit her any time.... Just a thought.

Shelby there are ALWAYS chickens in the roadway near me. There are a few people around that have HUGE flocks and free range them all the time, never clip their wings, so the "fly the coop".

Think your right about her being a NH Red. Hatchery stock is out of whack to the true breed for sure. My hatchery stock RIR's have a small comb and have seen that trend around this area for RIR's so guessing she is Hatchery NH Red with it's bigger comb. Either way, it falls under the Production Red.

This pic shows my red sex link's small comb fairly well. The RIR's are same size.

so happy for your new addition. they really are nice chickens, i had 6 of them one year. the only thing was they were the only ones that wanted to jump in the pigpen....lunchtime. she does look happy and glad you have her. they do lay lots of eggs!
