You get broody hens often?
Ginger, Welsummer, went broody a few times last summer, and just once so far this summer. I had another barnyard mix (RIP) who also brooded more than once, so I let her set some eggs this year. My broody jail was busy last year. 2 out of 17, not bad. Have a mix of breeds, no silkies or bantams.
I’ve never had one… one of my hens is 3 years and I’ve had her for a year, never got broody the rest are 1yr and under accept for me hen Mira who I adopted at 2yrs but she hasn’t laid any eggs yet.
Hoping my silkies are broody often!
That would be wonderful! How long have you had Mira, and what breed? Hope she'll lay soon?

Just checked my dates and the Buff Orp is 5 weeks tomorrow and the comb is growing and pinking a little, could she still be pullet do you think? Wish I had two of these to compare with! Not much change in wattles which is good.

I think the SS are actually 2 days younger and their hasn't been a big change but one has seen a little comb growth, the one more feathered. Still a possibility of pullets?
My chicks are at 5 weeks + today. That pink comb, though. Possibly cockerel. If it has fatter legs and feet, shorter tail feathers than the others, likes to carry itself more upright, then a roo to be. Also, if it seems to be growing faster/bigger than the others, (who look like pullets to me). From chick observations from 2 batches, of which had roos for comparison.

The Buff Orpington is a couple of days older than the other two so this might be why it looks bigger but I think it's just more feathered.

The tail feathers are longer than the other two at the moment but as I say a little older so might be reason for that.

I really can't tell with this one it's really got me on the fence.

Silkies I’ve heard don’t lay yet but are supposed to be very broody and that’s why they don’t lay much, it’ll be so much fun too hatch silkie eggs because one of my roosters is a silkie with two silkie hens but I’m planning on getting a Easter egger rooster in a couple weeks(he’s 3 months, mine is 6-8 months)

I’ve had her for nearly three months.. she’s a black copper maran, it took my other hen, Cinnamon, all fall and winter then half of spring before she started laying when I got her at 1-2 years old though, Cinnamon is a black sex link.
And oh my goodness cinnamons babies are sooo adorable, I had a barred roo last year so the baby was black with red bars

I’m not good with sexing but the white and/or black and brown could be roos? Hard to tell, I’ve had issues with Crow and Ghost because they had bigger darker combs but were both females.

They’re so cute, I hope you’ll show us when they’re grown up! I love time lapse like pictures of chicks to adults

I do love a good time lapse. I must keep this up to date because when I search the forums for comparisons to my chicks I'm always sad when I don't know the outcome!

Buff Orpington is 5 weeks today. The comb is pretty big but not huge and only tinted pink. There is just a hint of wattle. She's got some moistened feed around her beak and she's annoyed she's been pulled away from it 🤣

The SS are a couple of days younger. One has grown a slightly larger comb compared to the other. Neither have any pinking or redness to the comb and neither have any wattles that I can see.

Today's pictures, the Buff Orpington has some pinking to the comb but not a much in RL as much as in these photos which is not ideal because we had to take them under lights. I can't see any wattles yet.

The SS2 comb is quite pronounced but again more pink in the photo in RL but does have some wattle growth.

SS1 is still less feathered and little to no change in the comb.

Personality wise they are all very alike and nothing is standing out yet between them. They all rush the door now and do so at the same time. They all scream when someone walks by. They all nibble feed from your finger.
