So sorry to hear what has happened. Poor Gilbert.

A bigger and better job will come along.

Hard lesson to learn about bluffing, someone WILL call you on it. I think it's good you are away from them, though, it's clear they don't put the animals first, second or even in their top 10 list. If things are really that bad, a call to animal services should get the animals some help and ensure their safety. Best of luck finding a great new job soon!

Thank you everyone

....I appreciate your responses. As it would take too long to quote each of you & answer questions, I'll respond to a few here:

*there are no "animal welfare" agencies here & what there is is pitiful. As long as an animal is fed/watered daily & has any type of shelter...nothing will be done

*I don't care about the job...I won't go back....I start a new job Monday...I only care about Gilbert & his well being

*They're not just horse owners...they have over 500 animals, 100 different species. They own them because they can, but know nothing about them or their care...the more delicate ones with special needs will die. When I got there, fruit eaters were eating alpo canned dog food....the gentle reindeer had her antlers knocked off with a baseball bat because she was taking too long to shed them & the owner needed them to finish decorating his entrance sign...animals are pushed into trailers with heavy equipment (dozers & forklifts)...animals with serious injuries left to die on their own because they don't believe in euthanasia or want to pay for it. Yesterday was just my breaking point. I stayed because I cared & tried to give those animals a better life than they would have without me. I feel so sorry for all of them...but my heart just can't do it anymore.

*Raising a joey is not like a puppy...it's as close to a new born human that you can get. If it didn't have a drive-through, I haven't been there...no grocery store, no walmart,no family vacation, nothing. Feeding every 2 hours around the clock & working 60+ hours a week with him hanging over my shoulder in his pouch. And yes...I did think about stealing him!

*Freds Hens...you are absolutely right, but this is not an office job & I'm not just leaving a desk at their mercy...these are living creatures. Because I care is why this is so hard.

Maybe you can offer to buy Gilbert. If these people are as unscruptulous as you say, then money may talk. They may sell him to you so they wouldn't have to care for him.

I feel the same. These people do not deserve your efforts. Though it is very sad the animals seem to be doomed in their care, but if they call you when things get even worse I would not return. You did the right thing as you stated, stand your ground. This may help you in further situations.and I also believe God does not close one door without opening another. Anyone that would break an animals leg to have a look needs their actions brought to authorities attention. Excuse me, but what a dumb@ss. Good luck

Gee! Sorry to hear about all the trouble.

Right or wrong unfortunately everything comes with a price. You stood on your principles (is that the right way to spell) even though you were right, it came with a cost.

Oh, I am so sorry! But you had to get out. From what you say, these people don't want to learn, and they would have just dragged you through more and more misery until you were utterly broken.

As rebecky said, maybe you can buy Gilbert? If you can't meet their price, see if you can get donations. Then when he's big enough, donate him to a better zoo or park.
