Just an update on my flock. I attended the Poultry show in Great Falls in April and met a lot of great folks and saw some great birds too. My plan is to breed both Belgian d'Anvers and Dutch bantams, and to show them. I also keep some free range standard breeds for eggs and insect control on my property.
My flock, my breeding program and my coops/ pens have increased in the past few months. I've hatched 6 Bearded Belgian d'Anvers in Quail and 2 bantam "mutts" in my incubator. They are now 8 weeks old. Lots of trials and tribulations with the incubator. I also have 2 golden laced Wyandottes and 2 partridge rocks that are 9 weeks old.
I acquired a quality breeding trio of Belgian d'Anvers, also in quail, a few months ago. Both the hens from the Belgian trio, are now raising broods. They started with 5 eggs each and hatched out 7 chicks. The chicks were 3 with one hen and 4 with the other. However, yesterday one of the 3 chicks decided to switch pens. I left him there as he seems to do just fine with the other brood. Besides I don't know which one he is. These are the beginnings of my Bearded Belgian d'Anver flock. I hope to show some at the October poultry show in Great Falls.
I have also added a nice LB (Light Brown) Dutch Cockerel and I plan to make him part of my Dutch breeding. I am waiting for some pullets that should be available this fall. I lost my old BLB (Blue Light Brown) Dutch rooster about a month ago.
So my standard flock is now 4 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Partridge Rocks, and 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes. My bantam flock has 7 mixed bantams (my mutts), 15 Bearded Belgian d'Anvers (all quail), and 1 LB Dutch cockerell. I think that's 31 birds.
