I live in Alberta also. One of my chicks got accidentally separated from my broody at 2 days old, and it died. When they get cold, they start clicking. This one did that. I am sorry, but I have to disagree. No they don't .....Lock them in the coop at night with shavings on the floor...A lot tougher than you think...
It`s the first few days that really matter. My hens barley sit's on them when they are outside.By week one they dont go under her at all.If the coop has no drafts they will be fine.

They just need the choice of warmth. They know when they are cold.Yesterday was only +12C.....My hen had her Tiny 10 day old Chicks outside foraging and they were perfectly fine running around...They are not under her until she goes in...
Not my first rodeo....I had chicks hatching here since January under Hens and moved them all to the coop...Nothing died and all went outside with Momma even with snow on the ground...Lol...Hers Chicks are very much ready to be outside in a coop....They just need the choice of warmth. They know when they are cold.
"They just need the choice of warmth" that makes sense...do you think a heat light, shavings, or straw is best? They don't really burrow. They like to huddle together though. I wasn't planning on running electricity to the coop, but will if I need to.They just need the choice of warmth. They know when they are cold.
Cool! Yes, they are pretty hardy, I agree. I just think having a heat lamp is better. Not my first rodeo....I had chicks hatching here since January under Hens and moved them all to the coop...Nothing died and all went outside with Momma even with snow on the ground...Lol...Hers Chicks are very much ready to be outside in a coop....
