I lvoe my new job, but some calls are just depressing

Only thing I can say is this country is in a heck of a lot worse shape than what the gov. is leading us to believe.

Exactly. NONE of of realtor customers are ording right now. :: sigh ::

Probably don't want to hear this, but out of 9 patients in the hospital only 1 person pays. Found that out last weekend.

Want an even worse story.
A volunteer EMT is killed on a call. There is NO insurance for EMS personal who are killed on the job.
They figured her family should have received around $523,000.
Just enought to cover the cost of sending her kids (5) to college and to cover the loss of income.

heres is a simple idea to get i though our gverments head of how we are living in this economy

1. mke them work for minimum wage and see how far they get on a paycheck

2. make them live in a section 8 housing and kids in a public school system that doesnt care if your kids can make a life after they graduate

3. make them live on the streets like the homeless or in a shelter and worry if you are gonna get mugged or see your next meal out of a dumpster

4. make them go to the poor section of a hospital service where you have to wait in line with no medicle insurance and see how fast they get service for an life threatening emergency

5. heres is my best thought of all, is to strip them of all they have with nothing to live on and no where to go and see what kind of service they get and a job with no benefits or retirement to see you through your golden years except to live in a retirement home and stare at the 4 walls

But... where are you, it's not in your profile lines to the left or your sig line? Very hard to know which NHS you refer to?

My mom is unemployed. She moved to ID for a job and then got laid off a few months later. The rules at the time (almost a year ago) were that since she paid into CA for 30+ years and only ID for a few months, she had to apply to CA (per CA and ID unemployment people). As expected, CA approved it. She is suppose to have another year or year and a half left of unemployment benefits and she just got a notice from CA unemployment that some new law that Congress passed allows them to drop her from their benefits. So, she can no longer collect unemployment. Not sure what ID will do since she was only in the state for a few months.

If ID does accept it, it will be based on a few months of employment and the rest her unemployment benefits, so her benefits will be MUCH less than what it should be based on what her actual salary was (which is what CA based it on since it was right after her being laid off).

The health related part (to go along with this topic)? She found a lump in her breast. Her employer kept their health insurance for them even though they had no work and were laid off (really nice guy!). But, he had to cancel it in Dec. The premium is $300 - $350/month. She can't afford it.

Especially without her unemployment benefits. She is worried about losing the house if she can't get enough benefits to cover the mortgage. To help out, her boyfriend of nearly 2 years found a renter for his house ($400 less a month than the mortgage, so he'll still have to make up the difference) and he is moving in with her to reduce their bills. Even if they got married right away, his insurance would go up $300 a month to add her, so there isn't any difference than taking the COBRA! Plus, the insurance is an 80-20 and who can cover 20% of their medical bills?!?! Using dtnd's example of $15,000 for a broken femur, 20% is a whopping $3000!!!! My mom's better off living in a bubble since with or without insurance, she is in trouble!

I'm in the UK. If I was still in Wales I would get all my meds for free too, but over the border in England we pay abut £7.50ish for each item we get prescribed. Though I currently get everything free because I'm pregnant. I also get any dental work done free, as do children. whereas if you go to an NHS dentist as an adult you still have to pay a reduced rate.

What we actually suggest is getting single policies. Sometimes it works out to be cheaper. All I know is that if my husband lost his job, and I wasnt working. We would loose the house if he didnt find another job right away. There is no way we could afford the health insurance AND the mortgage etc. Luckily though his job is safe. They dropped his immediate manager and kept him

And the company I work for is still growing. They actually have another ad up on several of the job sites looking to fill the desks on my floor. And there are several open and needing people.

I completely agree.

As a Canadian with 'free' health care, I can tell you it is not free and it is not very good. I mean, compared to the U.S, of course it is great- but anytime ANYONE goes to emerg, they are stuck waiting for hours and hours, I;m talking at LEAST 4 hours. A friend who was drugged and dropped off in emerg was left in her ER waiting room chair for 5 hours waiting for a doctor. By the time the doctor saw her, she wasnt out of it anymore and was fine to go home. Thank god she wasnt in real danger, because they werent in any hurry to see her. I have lots of stories like this, friends who have gone in with broken bones, illness, etc and waited a ridiculous time in the waiting rooms of ERs. Not to mention all the issues I have seen with people nbeing declined coverage for 'experimental treatments'. If you have a very rare disease. and are declined a treatment that is saving people with your disease, how would you feel? Very sad.

The only time you're seen instantly in an American ER is if you're dead or dying. And even then you might not be seen: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19207050/

Because
we have few affordable options, especially for the uninsured, a lot of people end up going to the ER for minor illnesses-like a cold or the flu. Why? Because ERs are often more flexible about payments than a typical doctor's office. It's also easier to skip out on the bill.

It is appalling to me that we're supposedly one of the greatest nations in the world, yet we are the only first-world country without universal health care. We spend MORE money on health care than any other nation, and yet we're incapable of taking care of our own citizens? How has everyone but us figured this out?
