These are authors that I have really enjoyed. You may too. Most of them write books that I believe would actually fit into a few different genres.

Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child-start with Relic and it goes from there. They write murder mystery thriller types with some syfy thrown in. They have also written books by themselves which were really good too. (Relic was made into a movie that was absolutely awful & didn't follow the book but the book was really great.) website: www.prestonchild.com

Matthew Reilly-action/archeology-start with Seven Deadly Wonders, The Six Sacred Stones & The Five Greatest Warriors. I'm usually not much for action books but these were really good with enough of a mix from other genres to make them a joy to read. Hi! If nobody mentioned them yet, check out the Repairman Jack series by F Paul Wilson
and the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher.

If you like a Female PI series, Sue Grafton has one starting with "A" she is up to "U" and "V" comes out in November.


I like them because they are set here, so I spend time figuring out what street/business/area she renamed.

What a great thread! I've printed it to file for the next time I need some books.

I have the tendency to reread all of my favorite stuff every few years, mostly because I haven't found anything better, so I am excited to check out some of the recommendations!

Very light reading mysteries are Rita May Brown's series co-authored by her cat, Sneaky Pie. I think they are generally referred to as the Sneaky Pie Brown series. I like her other books too.

Steig Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy is very good. Definitely not light reading, but compelling. Don't expect any more books. The author died of a heart attack just as his books were achieving international success.

Kid's books, but very good, are the Lightning Thief series by Rich Riordan.

TERRY PRATCHETT!!!
He's written like 30 books, all set on a fantasy-ish world. There are different character lines, with different settings--farm settings, city settings, etc. He tries to capture our world and make it a little easier to understand. With dragons. If you want to give him a try, start with "The Wee Free Men". It's the beginning of the Tiffany Aching storyline, and a great way to be introduced to Discworld.

Also, all of Tamora Pierce. Another fantasy world, loosely based on ancient Europe~love it. I would start with either Beka Cooper ("Terrier" is the first book) or Alanna of Trebond ("The First Adventure" in the Song of the Lioness series)

These series are both easy reads in my opinion, the second series more so. Pratchett actually brings up important social issues in a semi-comedic setting.

Recently made into a hbo series. The hbo series VERY VERY much keeps to the book. The season is over now. They start again after the new year.

The wheel of time and a song of ice and fire are similiar but Martin is SOOO much better. Many people prefer him. Its good I read the Wheel of time first, otherwise I would have been sorely disappointed.

Wheel of time WAS started first and there are many similarities.
