There is a big difference between losing one, and getting inferior birds shipped to you, what ever the reason. I expect to have some losses when getting chicks shipped, but I sure don't expect to get birds with deformities!

I agree.
Yes, everyone must understand that these are big hatcheries we're talking about and they process tons of chicks year round... but the thing is the person packing your birds should know better then to put a bird with a deformed foot in your box.
Another thing we must realize is that when they have chicks for sale, EVERY one of those chicks usually gets booked up for that specific hatch... my point being that it is very much possible that they could not afford to put a different SF in your box and waste one.
That chick should be fine. It should grow up and be just like a normal chicken... except for the deformed foot.
I would call and let them know about the deformed leg on the chick, and I would ask for my money back. But we mustn't blame the hatchery for the person that packed the chick.
I would complain too, especially since this hatchery advertises that they are trying to preserve rare breeds. I've been reading several posts about them lately, and I sure don't like what I'm hearing about them. :|

apperantly they were very busy, because they told me at first that all chicks they placed in the box were fine and deformed leg on my chick must be an injury. Only after i suggested that they might have been busy and overlooked this one they agreed to give me a credit for this chick. If they mised a shell on chicks head, they should have been indeed very busy.
I thought they were a small hatchery, like very small compared to the big big ones, but I wonder if their work load ability is not keeping up their increasing popularity. A growing pains of sort. Deformed chicks and so on, is what I would more expect from a large large hatchery who does 10's of thousands of chicks a week if not 100's of thousands of chicks, and workers rushing to get them all out in the 3 day window. However, I am not familiar with them and my impression was that they did quality and you had to really pay for it too.

Good luck with your chicks!
Well, SHPC is very small hatchery run by TWO people March - October. The person who put that chick in my box and Mickis blue cochin with shell on its head was the owner/ operator of the hatchery himself. I talked to them and I hope that the issiu is resolved now.

Two people, is what Linda told me she also told me that Glenn checks all chicks over before putting them in the box. They also said that they had lots of frozen eggs, because Glenn doesn't get home from work until 4pm and most of the eggs are frozen buy than. if they had more people I assume they would have somebody to check for eggs more often.
