So, we have been planning on getting chickens for about 6 months. The local feed store started getting their chicks in, so we thought this was a perfect time. I figured 6 was enough....so we picked up 3 Barred Rocks and 3 Brown Leghorns. Well then my 6 year old tells me "It feels like we are missing someone, and we need more chickens". Well I thought so too. So off to the feed store which had gotten in fresh chicks that day. We went in for 2, came home with three. 1 golden sex link, 1 black sex link, and an "Ameraucana". Well the little Ameraucana is just the sweetest thing and I want to go back for another! I need an intervention! I just love these little chickies so much I want more HAHA. How many chickens is too many? what's the difference between 9 and 10 chickens? Should just deal with what I've got? I'm also worried I'll end up with a few Roo's in the mix..which I don't really want.....So anyway. I love this forum! Thanks for all the information that is posted

Just guessing, but the title of this thread probably applies to most of us here!

Just keep in mind that they grow fast. Also, make sure you have enough space in your coop to house them as adults. As long as you have room the sky is the limit. LOL

We started with three. Bought a small coop. Then bought one more. Then 2 more. Built a large coop. Now I finally have them all out in the coop and things are going well. And I started looking at new breeds online.... Lol.

Intervention? I am not sure asking enablers will work.

I believe my name on here kind of says it all for me. I wanted 6. We are up to 21. DH just caved at the feed store. Told me to get some. They have bantam cochins and polish right now. They are all straight run so I would have to get at leas 5 of each kind to make sure I got some hens right?

My logical side says OMG you have 21 hens NOW and get more eggs than you can use.
My squishy side says awww they are so cute, you know you want them.

Today logic won.
Tomorrow.......

No one can resist the chicken math.

I'm in the same boat!
I had it all planned out
25 straight run silkies
25 straight run Ameraucaunas
Ending up with a 50/50 ratio, I would roughly have 20-25 birds total. That is manageable.

Somehow I have 13 silkies, 7 Easter Eggers, 2 SLW, 1 australorp, 2 ducklings, and two adult silkies?!? I also have 15 more silkies coming next month along with my 25 Ameraucaunas.. Not too sure what happened but I blame chicken math, oh and chick days at TSC..

As I once had over 300 chickens.... I can not help you. But looking back, smaller is better. Easier to manage, but ohhhh I miss all the different fun breeds that I had to enjoy. You can Never have enough but try.

Ah!!! I have 8 out in the coop right now. One is sitting on 10 RIR eggs, (due to hatch this coming Wed.) out of which 9 for sure are fertile. AND..... I bought 10 chicks this morning. They are happily eating, drinking, pooping, sleeping, etc. in their brooder in my room right now.

8 Ameraucana's and 2 Welsummers (I think).

One thing is for sure, don't ask those who will encourage you to get as many chickens and chicks as you can put into your coop. Maybe, THAT'S why I haven't been on here for a very long time.

I swore I would never have chickens. Not in a million years I told dh. No way, no how.. Never..... Then one of my daughter's friends gave her a live duckling for her birthday. Who does that!?!? Of course we couldn't have just one. And of course hubby had to pick this time to introduce baby chicks into the mix. Who fell head over heels in love with the chicks? This chick!

So now we're up to 39 chickens and will be adding more in a couple of months. The point of this story? Don't look to me for an intervention, lol!
