I need an intervention...

I'm definitely struggling with the chicken math. I went through the whole 29 pages of the "what are your getting" post today and decided 10-12 really isn't that many. I should get a few more! I can't believe how many chickens some of you have. But I love it and I love them. I can sit forever watching them sleep, eat and drink. I really had no idea I would love them this much. My parents had ducks after most of us were out of the house and they were cute and loving and so I felt like ducks were more for pets and chickens were for eggs and meat (though I never plan to eat one of my flock). Boy was I wrong and so far (4 days in) it's been very pleasant! I plan on hitting the feed store Monday...again....and that's it! Hopefully.....

Last year I bought 12 chicks, I only wanted 6 but everyone at the store was telling me I'd lose some so I covered my bases and got double what I wanted. I never lost one, I did find a home for one of my three roosters. Learned here on the forum I probably didn't have enough hens for two roosters, late Fall I learned they were 100% right. Logical answer was to get rid of one of my roosters, I just can't do it. I raised the boogers and they're both good boys.

So I decided to get more hens for them, I can comfortably fit 6 more in our coop. So I ordered 8 from a feed store 'cuz I could pick what I wanted. They'll be here the first week of April, so I went into TSC to pick up some chick starter so I'm ready when I get the call they're in and ready to come home. Except I walked out of TSC with 6 assorted red pullets, sigh. My justification was that my alpha roo just LOVES his "red heads". Now a much larger coop expansion is in my future

Wow. I thought I was bad lol! I had to break the news to my poor husband that he'd have to figure out a way to add more nest boxes to our coop. He doesn't know it, but I'm stopping by feed store today... is excessive poultry grounds for divorce? ;-)

, we are waaaaaaaay hooked!! I'm thrilled to say that my hubby is as hooked as I am. I was going to order 25 more in a couple of months. His response? Get 40 or 50! YAY!

And we're going to get into Bantams too.

I asked hubby, "so seriously, how many chickens can I get before you get mad at me?" He said, " We can't fit many more in there. They'll be too crowded." I started to get sad until he continued, "But...if we should be able to get me some more Easter Eggers."

Woo hoo! He's hooked!

HeeHee! What a great thread! I'm still waiting for my first order of 14 to arrive - and I'm already searching out more! I'm as crazy as most here! Hubby started this all as a joke by putting a chicken mag in my Christmas stocking! Isn't he rethinking that strategy as he's out building a permanent coop and run!

The coop we're building will be fit for housing at least 25 chickens, so I have the room to grow! It's only my inexperience in keeping the babies that is keeping me at all in check!

I'm so thankful for all of you in this forum! Yay BYC!!!

I received a 'gift' of 2 roosters 10 years ago. Next year a 'gift' of two hens. And then there were babies.............

SOOOOOOOOO cute. I wanted to try hatching my own.
And then the feed store started carrying them in the spring......

10 years later I have over 50 adult birds and I hatch and raise well over 250 little ones a year.
