i bought day olds from greenfire farm. only lost one while in the house, it was preety sickly when it was shipped. MOved into the pump house until it got warm enough to keep them in a small coup outside.
Following week i believe i lost two over night, one looked a bit off, gave the ones a bit off some toltrazuril. Then i dosed everyone just in case 1x. thinking that may not have been enough, but i didnt have a ton left. I bought corid a week ago, because i lost two more. Yesterday another dead one and one looking very ill. hunched, fluff out, still eating but not sure footed. These were not cheap birds and they are my pets. I dont know what else to do. I have Sulfadimethoxine i use for coccidia prevention in my goat kids. should i try that? if so what would the dosage be and can it be given in water by chance? i have to individual dose my goat kids for 5 days ever 21 days but i worry about giving chicks liquid.
They are on a mix food of my layer feed that is purchased from a local farmer. It mostly grains with powder supplements. Mixed with a chick starter i got. So these are mixed together and water added. They love it and eat alot. I have been replacing the corrid water 1x a day. they still have the small chick waterer. I have given them sand for grit and probably got the coccidia from that? or just the ground outside.

ps. They are with some birds(silverudds blue) i hatched that are about a week older. raised together, havent lost any of those ones. Maybe the swedish blk hens have a lower immunity? but the two i lost first were the only ones i bought from greenfire that were silverudds. Along with having issues with my quail chicks, this is just beyond frustrating and so sad. I love all my animals and spend most of my free time (when im not working or sleeping) with them.
pss. I seen one of the little ones poop it still has some blood in it with liquid. So maybe the corid isnt working?

Layer feed is for hens who are actually laying eggs. It is not for birds under 20 weeks or so who are not active layers. Grit is not necessary for chicks eating a complete starter feed. Treated starter feed is readily available to prevent cocci in young chicks, and it is balanced and complete when fed all by itself. It gives them a good start in life and avoids this kind of heartbreak.

Chicken nutrition is a complex subject and takes a good bit of time and study to do successfully. I've been at this for way more than 20 years and even I don't kid myself that I can do it better than Tucker Feeds, et al.

i do 3/4 the chick starter, they dont really like it and its really fine, so i put some of the layer feed in it. It like scratch and peck feed.

Most of the fecal on the ground is normal looking nice chicken poop, but a few are just bloody spots:( i think its the one that isnt doing well at all. Thought he would of been dead this morning, but still hanging on. I put him in the pump house in a bit with food and water really close. I dont think he will make it. I started him on the sulfur drug, figured its not like its going to make him worse. I sure hope the other ones will continue to look good with the corid in the water.

well the little guy died and another is not doing well now :( i think i might just loose them all. this guy is grey so he wont last much longer :( corid still in the water. I gave them some eggs this morning might give more when i get home mixed in the food, they are thin. I think i will give sulfadimethoxine to each with the corid. i dont know what else to do.

my broody hen has three chicks, should i be putting corid in the water too? they are healthy little guys in a crate.

Sorry that you keep having losses. Could you try to get 1 or 2 necropsied by your state vet to confirm that it is coccidiosis and not something else? Here is a list of state vets to contact, and keep the body cold/refrigerated on ice in a cooler, and wrapped in a plastic bag, but do not freeze.

Chickens under 20 weeks old should not be getting layer feed because it has 4 x the calcium needed, and too much that young can damage the kidneys and can potentially cause gout and arthritis. Flock raiser or an all flock feed is very good when you have chicks, youngsters, and roosters with hens, since it is nearly identical to chick starter, but not as fine and powdery.

i just put a bit of the layer in the feed and mix it with the starter(they love the grains in it, i doubt there is enough powder to make a difference on calcium), . I turn it to mash so they wont waste so much,
I thought i purchased a better feed but since they dont like it, i wont buy it anymore.

I also have a turkey starter for the quail, should i mix some of that for more nutrients? or would that just mess things up worse. im really hoping the sulfur. can help. i never used corid before on my goat kids either.

The chick starter you are using may be better taken with a little water added. It has 1% calcium, and any layer feed they eat, will normally have 4% calcium. I wouldn’t feed any of that to the birds under 5 months old. Chicks usually don’t get coccidiosis for a couple of weeks, but they can be given Corid. Have you opened up any of the body’s after death to look for signs of coccidiosis? A state vet necropsy on a dead bird would be best, but here are some pictures of what to look for if you do a home necropsy:
