I have a class in my school that has us have chicks. One of the chicks was hurts so a friend of mine took her home she couldnt keep her anymore so i now have this chick but she isnt acting well at all. she isnt eating or drinking she is panting wont walk she lays on her side she is so weak her breathing is labored.... i dont know much about chicks but i have been trying to find information on them if anyone can help me it would be so wonderful! i dont want her to die she is very sweet and she is such a loving chick but i know eneough to know that this is not a good sign for a chick to be acting this way... i have a heat lamp on her and food and water in her cage (even though shes not eating or drinking) there is a towel for her to lay on and a bunch of soft beding for her. PLEASE if ANYONE has ANY advise i would soooo apreciate it i am so worried about her!

Do you know how warm it is under the lamp -- do you have thermometer? should not be more than 95 and no less than 70. about how old is the chick? can you take a picture of your setup and post it.

it is probably 75 she is about 4 and half 5 weeks old... she was attacked by another chick in class and that is why the other girl took her home i have her set up in a laundry basket.... i dont know much about farm animals this was for a class i just dont want to see her die. i dont have a thermometer but the heat lamp is abover her cage.... she is so weak.... when i got her (yesterday) she was chirping not walking much but she was chirping and now shes not even doing that....

It doesn't sound good for your chick. Do you have access to antibotics to add to her water? You can get them from the feed store if you have one near by.

ok i will go get some.... i dont know what to do with her..... she is breathing so hard

and opening her mouth...

you have her in the house? take the light away and see if that calms her down. at 5 weeks she should be okay for a bit at room temperature.

Check the temperature with a thermometer. It may be higher than you think. At that age, 75 degrees would be good. She may be too warm. Try giving her scrambled or chopped up hard boiled eggs and plain yogurt. Get some liquid polyvisol without iron. It's a children's vitamin that can be found at most drug stores or WalMart. Dribble a couple of drops on her beak every day.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! for all of the advise! i appreciate it soooooooo much! i will try all of that thank u all!

You have to get water and food into her!!!!! place a pan/bowel/saucer...etc...When you put the dish in dip the chicks beak in the water so she knows what and where it is! You may have to try an eye dropper. You can dribble it on the beak maybe add a lil sugar to sweeten it and help get energy up (not too much sugar). If she won't take any you may have to force it! Its not nice but it may save her life!!! Then you can try some soft scrambled egg for her to eat. Once she starts to eat and drink you can worry about the vitamins and stuff. WATER and FOOD are a MUST!!!!!

Good Luck and God Bless!
