I too had to switch to something a little cheaper. I am now feeding Diamond Naturals, Lamb & Rice. Normally I prefer a chicken based, lamb tends to cause gas, but the lamb ingredients were just a little better, so I tried it. My one dog who had horrible gas no matter what I fed him, is cured! Another has had skin problems since birth, looks better than ever. I am definitely impressed. I have always fed a premium brand, so it is not like they have been fed the cheap stuff.
I personally wouldn't trust anything Peta says. I agree, some companies are better than others, but Peta is not where I would get my info.
When looking at labels, the first ingredient is what is the highest percentage in your bag. So basically the first 5 or so ingredients are the most important and makes up the majority of the food. Anything that says "by-products" is not good, "meal" is better. If it says chicken, remember meat has a lot of water in it, so when cooked down, probably isn't the main ingredient. Chicken meal (or lamb, etc) is the meat already cooked down, so pure protein. There are many other key words, try a dog food comparison chart. They should tell you how to read labels.
