I never shared my BEAR pics!

Wow, I'm surprised fish and game doesn't relocate problem bears.

They do here in Arkansas. Have a friend that for the past 4 springs has ended up with a g&F trap in her yard......4 bears caught and relocated. Before someone imagines a leg trap and gets justifiably upset, these are like giant over sized 55 gal. barrel on wheels with a heavy mesh on one end and a "trap" door on the other. It is baited and when the bear enters the trap door is sprung and the bear is caught

Sounds like you gave the bear plenty of chances to find somewhere else to forage. Sorry to see that he just wouldn't take the hint, but I'm glad your chickens are safe now.

This post is in no way intended to be a critisism of your attempts to protect your flock from the bear. Where I am we have lots of bears, bobcats, fox, and almost every other kind of predator. I have absolutely no problems shooting raccoons and rats (and I do). But for the others, especially bears and bobcats, I will not shoot them and have made a strong effort to raise my chickens safely without doing harm to some of the other animals in my area. I live in the middle of a 200 acre pine and palmetto forest so I realized that the only way that I could keep the chickens somewhat safe was by using an electric fence. The pictures below show the setup. It is not solar and is attached directly to the coop and the five strands of wire surround the entire coop and run. Two strands are grounds and three are hot. In looking at your pictures I think I see an electric wire attached to the coop but I am pretty sure that any black bear can get to that fairly easily and your bear proved that I am right. You have succeeded in ridding yourself of one bear but I would be certain that you are going to continue having bear problems in the future and I think you may not want to continue just shooting them as they come around. My fence has successfully detered many bears. They get shocked and they learn to stay far away. My suggestion to you and anyone with large type predators is to try and set something up that will deter

You live really close to where I grew up. ( I lived across the street from Butte College) and I didn't realize we had bears there. Mountain lions, coyotes for sure, but very surprised on the bears. Stay safe, and reinforce your coops!

That'd be awesome.. If I could afford it..

and to correct you I dont concider shooting every bear that comes around. I did what I had to do for this instace. I dont live in a highly bear populated area either.. We've had 1. the same 1 that came around last fall too im sure. He was taking things that weren't food too... I opened my front door one night to go to work and he was on my porch. I'm looking out for myself as well as my chickens.

Thanks for your advice though.

Thank you for sharing the bear pictures and story. That was a good one! Like reading a novel - you wrote well about what happened to you. I hope most of us here on BYC never have such experiences, but I enjoyed reading your story.
