I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION '' UNDER GOD'' INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.

AMEN

Redhen, I don't consider the pledge religious either but there is at least one denomination that does not say the pledge or salute the flag. It has nothing to do with their patriotism.

In that particular cartoon the boy looks smug and disrespectful with his arms crossed and feet on the desk in blatant defiance.. I have no issue with some folks, who wish our country no harm, who have differing religious views, not saying the pledge. Beligerent, outright disrespect though...right or wrong, I can't help but want to smack em upside the head.

So what is the comic about?

Is it about the Marine who served his country and is now wheel chair bound?

Is it about the kids who stand and recite the pledge not even knowing what it really means? Is this a missing clip from The Wall?

It is about the one kid in the class who's parent's taught him the pledge is a solemn oath and a way of showing gratitude and patriotism to your country?

Is it about the "God" issue?

Is it some sort of peaceful resistance statement?

Does Kevin understand what he is doing or is his mind somewhere else?

Does the shiny floor indicate a reflection of some sort?

I guess depending on where you are coming from reflects how you view this. My own views of patriotism change as I'm getting older.

For the record, Kevin would get a power wedgy after that class.

I do not view the pledge as religious, however I will say the "under GOD" part because our fine country was founded on the belief in Him and because I believe God should be one of the center focuses of the US. Sometimes being politically correct is not correct.

ETA: If those religious groups are not saying the pledge of allegiance, they can simply leave out the part that offends them. I will not even begin to guess as to which religious affiliation refuses to recite the pledge of allegiance. However they should state their allegiance to our country since they are in the country, using our resources, participating in our economy and "hopefully" paying taxes.

I do not pledge myself to anything other then God. This goes for taking an oath as well.
I am thankful that we are not mandated to pledge to the flag or the country.
I am also thankful that this country was founded so that I could have that freedom.

ETA: I am NOT non resistant, in case you are curious

THe Amish came to this country for the very same reasons I mentioned at the beginning of my comment.
