You're saying that if I have a fenced in yard, I shouldn't let my three and a half year old out to play? That if someone else's dogs break into my fence (dig under, etc) that it's *my* fault for letting my child play in my private yard?

Here's a true story that shows how ridiculous laws and people can be:
Two years ago a small child was killed by a trespassing snowmobile while playing in the snow in front of their house. This case was recently settled in court and the drunk snowmobeler got off scot free! The childs parents were told it was their fault for not watching the child. That's our wonderful court system. All for the criminal and nothing for the victim!

Thank you - she is 19 now and you'd never know. She absolutely loves animals; I came home yesterday and found a mini horse in my yard. It wasn't staying...just visiting but that's how she is.

I should mention that we have dogs; will always have dogs - love them unconditionally - but they have minds of their own and you can't, no matter how much you think you can, control them. They do just snap. My sister was no way at fault which is why we didn't insist that the dog be put down. Just never trusted him unsupervised after that. The cancer could very well have had something to do with it but there were no signs.

I do get angry when a dog gets a chicken. I will take care of it if it repeats this act. I NEVER blame the dog, for it is doing something natural.
I do blame the owner of the dog for not taking proper care of his/her animal. I have dogs that I can leave in the chicken yards and they will not touch a chicken. The best dog is the oldest, she now lives in the house, but she guards the whole property. Whenever a chicken starts to fuss, she is down the hill to see what is going on. As for any other predator, two or four legged, they get inside a chicken run, I have them for dinner the next day.

Hi..i am not trying to argue with you..but....just because a dog attacks another animal does not mean it will ever attack a human...unless there has been aggression shown from these dogs to a human in the past..they are probably just being dogs...if one of my dogs got out in the yard when the birds were out.....well, i'd have some dead birds....will my dogs attack me?...highly unlikely...(you can NEVER say never though..), because my dogs respect humans, but ....they would love to chase and kill any small flighty, squawking thing running around...its just their nature...

I know what you mean by the dogs not attacking you just because they attack another animal and normally I would let it go if it killed one of mine, unless I happened to be really close to the bird. But last I checked, dogs are related to wolves and wolves attack people too. Dogs still have some of that ancestry in them, but domestication has made SOME dogs as nice as possible. It just depends on the dog! I remember we had some neighbors move in when I was 12, they had two terriers. These dogs were complete strangers to me. As far as I know, they didn't kill animals much unless it was something like a baby rabbit. Well, guess what, ONE BIT ME IN THE BUTT! Literally... Just goes to show... dogs are unpredictable. Eventually I grew not to be scared of it and the one that bit me turns out to be nice. Also, these birds are like family to us. What if your children got attacked by a dog? I was 12! and I still got bit by a little terrier. Even though an animal is domesticated doesn't mean it isn't or can't be dangerous.

also..i'd like to add..you are right..sometimes a dogs brain can just snap..thats why i say..You can NEVER say never with a dog....

Getting a mental picture here.

I go out to my totally enclosed coop/run only to find two big dogs in the coop/run ripping my chickens apart.

Do I go and try to break it up and risk my own safety. These dogs are on a mission.

Do I run back to the house for my own protection and just let it happen. These things happen fast.

Do I call animal control, knowing they will be out in maybe half an hour?

What to do. I just don't know.

OR what if I take my dog out to poddy after dark which I do......and there's a big strange dog out there?

That's why we have laws. There's no time to resolve a problem like free roaming strange/stray dogs.

And there's no predicting them either.

I am a dog lover. That's why I keep my dog supervised. I would hate to see her put down because she scared someone who didn't know how docile she is.

If i had a dog that EVER put his teeth on me or anyone in aggression..it WOULD be gone that day...i would never trust that dog again to live with my family..sorry you got bit in the butt...(i wanna snicker..but it wouldnt be very nice..

LOL It's ok. Gotta have some humor here
wink.png
But the thing is, the two terriers worked as a team. One (all black) grabbed my coat, while the other dog(black and white) bit me in the butt while i was distracted! AND guess what? They got rid of the black one instead of the one that actually bit me
