I find this kind of reasoning to be.......well...not real reasonable, just real emotional.

Now, shooting a hawk will definitely get you acquainted with the law.

Also . . . I would hesitate to shoot a wild animal, because they are doing what they are supposed to be doing . . . being wild. Domestic animals are supposed to be cared for by people, on their property. If they're not, they're fair game. I feel more guilty getting rid of a bothersome raccoon or a rattlesnake in the garage than I will ever feel about shooting a domestic animal running amok. "Cruelty" would be if I decided to hurt it before I killed it, not simply giving it as swift a death as I can manage.

here's another thought. what about rabies and other things strays or loose pets may carry? if stray domesticated dog comes onto my property should i risk exposing myself to this because it is a domesticated animal? we have a problem in this area with coons and rabies, easy to spread to dogs running loose. if people are not responsible enough to fence and tag their animals why should i believe they would bother to vaccinate?
i find it cruel that anyone would even suggest to me that some stray has more rights on MY property than me or my beloved birds.

Yep, same here. Heck, I've shot a dog for tearing into my trash for the millionth time! If one hasn't noticed, the animal shelters are filled to overflowing with dogs and cats and the population continues to grow. This was not a problem back in the days when dispatching a stray animal was something one did to control the spread of rabies, to protect livestock, or to put an end to their raiding food from your garbage.

Hawks are just now making a comeback in the wild, after the DDT problem, and are not near the problem as the feral cat population and dogs running loose, killing where they will.
