I think I got scammed and robbed :(

Ohh thanks a lot! No way I am getting hens before I decide what to do with them. Maybe I should feed them and make them happy for a while. Someone might like them and take them.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

I was scammed earlier this year. I paid $20 each for Swedish Flower & $10 for an alleged. Very clearly as they aged they are mixed breed mutts.

The SFH ended up having a pea comb and white earlobes, no flowers. Another 1 ended up with a blackish comb, dark legs and no flowers. The Giant is blue with gold leakage around the neck, smaller than my white leghorn, just as flighty, also blackish red comb.

I emailed the guy and told him exactly what I was looking for. I also emailed him and let him know they were rip off artists! I drove 45 minutes each way in my Suburban to get them. So I do have proof of that.

Thing is this guy advertises every single day, several rare breeds. I started posting a warning when I got fed up with him touting the greatness of breeds he isn't selling. I got an email from someone who said they were taken for $150 for alleged Cuckoo Marans by the same guy. And they told me about selling to an old lady who was driving a nice car and "willing to pay" when I was there. They also tried to sell me a 7 month old when I was there and I see them advertising that same 7 month old all the time.

I am thinking about contacting the department of agriculture because aside from the bait and switch they are pulling..... they are also selling across state and county lines and are not NPIP certified plus running a business without a license.

Also, the sheriff may care if they have more reports of similar incidences. Can't hurt to call.

Another suggestion, NEVER EVER have animals delivered that you haven't personally inspected!

Anyways, that guy knew.

I really despise liars.

Give those cockerels away. Even if you can't, someone else is probably willing to put them on the dinner table. Maybe start next spring with pullets from the feed store, most are done for this year. Most claim 90% accuracy with females and there are several breeds to choose from. Get a variety so you can easily tell them apart and have plenty of eye candy. After raising many broods, I can say that 4 is a good minimum #. Between now and then maybe look at some breed information and try to pick something you like, it will be more enjoyable. Just an ideal.

Best wishes.

All I wanted was just 4-5 hens to start with and deal with the problems they bring slowly and learn. I did not even want any rooster. My neighbors are too close they might complain. Now I have 4 roosters lol They are not fighting so I am happy about that but they have been here just a few hours. That might change very soon when they feel more comfy. This was not expected at all. It did not even cross my mind that someone would do that. I was worried about my coop and how much better I should make it for the hens and the coming winter. The rooster problem was not even in my mind.

I'm so sorry to hear that

How unfortunate! I agree with everyone else though, they certainly are cockerels.

I agree with EggSighted4Life, perhaps you should report this just so others won't be deceived also. You can always open a complaints file against them or see if there is one already.

Hope you find the boys a nice home / someone who can take them off your hands. Perhaps even trade you for some young hens.

Good luck, and welcome to BYC.
There is so much great information here and lots of very helpful people!

Would it be possible to build another coop for some hens? And use your current coop for the roosters. Or build a wall down the middle of the coop to seperate them.

Very sad to hear about something like this. It's certainly not the way you want to start in as a first time owner and it's very unfair to both you and these birds.

Good luck in whatever you decide to do with these cockerels. I think the best thing would be to just give them away to someone who knows how to process them and would want them for dinner. I couldn't do it myself, but I'd be okay if they were someone else's dinner as long as it was done humanely. I certainly would not return them to the scam artist who'll only do this again and again, and who knows what fate could befall these birds.

Only thing I can advise before getting any other birds in the future is research, research, research. Learn about the different breeds, decide which ones seem right for you, and keep an eye on this forum to learn how to spot the difference between pullets and cockerels (or even male and female chicks). That way no one should be able to scam you in this fashion again.

oh I am so sorry. I do think you should inform the authorities. They seem to be running a big scam. It is really bad.
This place is a very small village and I am new here so I don't know anyone. I don't have a car just a bike. Apparently this guy is known as a scammer. But I am going to the police tomorrow and talk to them. Just ask them their suggestion. Meanwhile I want them to know this happened. I am sure they heard about this guy. Also it bothers me to just sit there and feel sorry for myself. I love animals and prob will keep these as pets until I find someone to give them. I think they are cute and they have no idea what's going on lol I enjoy watching them and how carefully they move when I sit there. I am trying to have them eat from my hand.

I didn't want to have a lonely winter. My dog and I are very bored at home all day. I was so hoping for 4-5 hens and see them walk around and come around when I dig the soil and so on. I have a little garden where I grow some veggies. This was the first year so I didn't have great stuff and really wanted hens garbing earth worms when I shovel. I even delayed it until I get them just to have them eat the earth worms :(

This kind of thing happens to loads of folks, every day. But, the fact that this crook delivered them to you personally, really makes me boil over. He just wanted you to think what a kind, considerate person he was.

If someone would point you to a reliable breeder - you could take the worry out by getting point of lay pullets or mature laying hens- so you KNOW they are females.
