I Think My Geese Were Breeding...

My geese have a breeding season it’s from Feb till June. My gander gets ornery and they mate quite a few times a day and once breeding is over my gander gives out a holler makes me think of Tarzan lol.

Yes I’ve heard of the gander getting aggressive during breeding season. Not looking forward to that. Any tips for dealing with an evil gander? Also, how will I get to their goslings when they hatch them out when I’ll have to sell them? Seems like you have quite a bit of knowledge so if you have any tips on dealing with an aggressive goose that would be great haha! Yeah my gander makes a high pitch almost like a distress call sound, every time he breeds that’s good to know though! I hope I could maybe in the future find a few rare goose eggs in the fall!

Well both parents are very protective of their kids so about all you can do is find a way to block the parents from the goslings so you can get them. Mine only had goslings once and it was only 2 so they got to keep them an raise them. Geese parents are not easy to deal with and it's a trait I really like they are very protective. But it can mean bites and wing slaps for any one who tries to mess with their goslings.

That’s a really good read! I have definitely had to put my gander in his place SEVERAL times. And he’s come at me so I’ve had to get very serious with him. Thankfully he knows I’m alpha (most of the time anyway aha). Yeah I’m going to have to really plan for breeding season. I’m probably going to use a rake or rod of some sort to keep the little dinosaurs from biting me. Anyway, thanks for the advice!

A broom comes in handy too. lol Keep us updated on how it's going. I love my gander who is going on 14 yrs, not many would keep him that long and I have threatened him many times with the platter. But He's my boy so he's here from hatch to death. I can already see subtle changes in behavior but I can still rub his head if I am quick. lol

Not that unusual for your geese to breed this time of year, especially if weather pattern warms up. Production breeds (embden, toulouse, chinese) tend to lay year round if they do not have babies to raise, unless it is bitter cold. I have two production bred girls breeding and checking out nest boxes to lay right now. I've had November clutches and January clutches. I used to think breeding season only went from Feb to May, but I have learned it is more off/on all year, depending on the goose. I once even had a buff dewlap toulouse born on Christmas Day (which was a bit of a shocker to me, but the best Christmas present ever!)

If they’re fresh you can eat them, if she’s been sitting on them the 28+ days it takes to incubate those will be eggs you want to avoid....l
