RAREROO - Are you sure thats a black swede?????? Looks like a really old cayuga. Where did you get her?

I'm not sure if calls fly since ive never had them before. - want them but havent had any yet.

Her name was Road Runner or Lil mama - I agree with the broody statement, Buffs are the BEST! She was such a good mama

and even though she was the smalllest duck she was THE boss. You didnt mess with her lol. She was a sweet heart though and her favorite thing to do was take a bath in the smallest bucket she could find, so no one else could join!

She also layed extra large green eggs and was VERY photogenic

wow i didn't think about that color eggs u know, i tought it was only the hens, around how much does a buff cost ??

Yep she's a black Swedish, she came from a feed store the same time as the Blue, but you're right, she is getting old, maybe 4-5 years old. In her first year when she feathered out she was solid black on her head, back, and belly, she just had the little white bib like all swedish, and then every year, every time she molts, she gets more and more white, I expect she will be solid white in a few years if she lives long enough.

Ducks are really fun to have around, I love them all. I keep Khaki Campbells, Muscovys, Pekins and White Tufted.

But if you are thinking of having your broody hen set duck eggs I think you might have a problem. If she is already on a clutch of chicken eggs they will hatch in 3 weeks. Most duck eggs would have another week to go ( Muscovys 2 weeks). When the hen leaves the nest with the chicks the duck eggs would need to go in an incubator to finish or they would be lost.

On the other hand you could replace all the chicken eggs with duck eggs and be alright, or, if you want to do a mixed clutch get her started on duck eggs for a week and then add in the chicken eggs so they will hatch at the same time.

It really depends on wher eyou buy it from. Where are you located?? More than likely you will have to order them from a hatchery.

Yep, they are great broodies, one of mine started setting at aroung 6-7 mos old, she was barely old enough to lay. But mine lay regular white eggs.

And Nava, I got mine from TSC as ducklings and they were like $4.00 and some cents each.
