I want to create larger silkie chickens

I just started the project last year, this year I'm starting the F2s.

I'm only estimating, but I think at least 4 years, & some minor corrections, they should breed true. (Tip: Skip Bantam Silkies, they carry Bantam Dwarfism Genes. Bantam Dwarfism is a type of Sex Linked Dwarfism, & will throw Small offspring every once in awhile.) There are many different types of Sex Linked Dwarfism that exists.

So... You just breed S with JG?

Im thinking this: I breed my S roo with a JG hen and they babies may or may not be fluffy but they would be larger

Then I would breed the babies with a different S that was not their father. This way the babies are big and could be any color but they would be fluffy.

Would that work? I dont care about egg production or anything I just want a big silky because its cool and why not, just like you made a giant silky and you posted a picture of a big roo and a smaller normal sized S roo

Would that plan work? I get it could take multiple generations but tell me what you did and what you bred specifically, please

But may I ask, why not start with the European Silkie that is apparently a “standard size” not the dwarves we have on this side of the pond....

Penny for your thoughts?
/End of line.
For some reason normal sized silks are illegal in the US, or at least thats what the internet told me and I have never seen a breeder with averaged size fluffs

I doubt they are illegal. That does not make any sense. They are just not common in the US. They are very common in Europe. Importing them would be a hassle, but not impossible. 😊

None of the initial crossing will have silkie feathering. They also will not have the right combs and may or may not have the right colored skin and extra toes. They will only have one copy of feathered feet and one copy for crests.

Second generation still may not lock in the skin, toes or comb. Theoretically half will be heterozygous for feathered feet and half will be homozygous. Also theoretically half will have silkied feathers and half won't. Again theoretically, half will be heterozygous for crests and half will be homozygous

You could use Jersey Giants, if that's all you have at the moment.

I'm using Brahmas for the project.

First Generation Silkie crosses are solid feathered, the silkie Gene is a recessive trait that needs two copies to show. The second generation cross, or F2s should yield Silkied Offspring. This is when you take the F1 cross offspring, & breed back to silkies. You could use the father again if needed, wouldn't hurt.
