I want to incubate eggs but fear roosters

The auction is at Cedar Lane Feeds. Its just outside of Elmer. The price varies depending on how many people show up with animals.. Sometimes the display cages are full, but that seems to be in the spring. They also sell goats, pigs, cows and general stuff that people bring in. Auction starts at 1. All entries need to be there by 12pm. You do not have to stay for the auction, they pay by check the next day. If you want to buy, they take checks, cards and cash.

IMO it's not good to even walk around those types of events. There's no telling what someone or something is bringing with them as far as illnesses go. And if someone can say with 100% certainty that the animal they brought is free of any illness or disease thsts even more the reason to stay away.

I have seen a person swabbing some birds. They are from the state. They do spot checks for illness. There are farmers and livestock men there just trying to do business. I am thankful to have a place like this so close to home.

I got the impression from the Hackettstown one (which sounds very similar to the one @KelseyBoxer is describing) that you can leave your cockerel/rooster and leave - so no wandering around needed.

I'm going to offer another perspective that might not be popular, so please just think of me as devil's advocate.

Beyond the problems that come with incubation, I won't incubate because I hate the idea of bringing a bunch of lives into the world and then just throwing away the ones that are inconvenient. Idk. Makes me feel icky. I know to most people, they are just commodities, but they are living beings. I'd feel like I was being selfish.

Not judging. This is just how I feel knowing that this isn't how most of the chicken-raising world works. I think you ought to consider this angle since you, like me, can't slaughter your own birds.

you can sell them on here! I have chicks and I think 2 are roosters. I am only allowed to have 1 crower so I may try to sell/trade one here. otherwise, I would love one of your big boys for breeding.

Hi there! Hatching eggs is the most rewarding and exciting experience. I highly recommend you do it! Do you know anyone that would take the roosters? You probably won't be able to tell the difference for a few months, which would give you time to find someone. If you are on any social media, you could post the roosters as available for cheap or free, and I bet you would have many takers!

Don’t hatch eggs. We ended up with 3 roosters and one hen. One of the roosters caused my favorite silkie to have a fatal accident in the yard. I do not have the heart to butcher them and my flock can be stressed at times because of their endless harassment of the ladies. Hopefully I can get at least two of them safely rehomed into good non kill families. I’ll never hatch eggs again.

That is obviously an average- you could get more- but you could get none! We incubated 15 and 10 lived/hatched… all hens!

I only hatch rare breeds, and then most of the time people will have them for free, especially if there are any hens spare to go with them
