IA here

on monday. i'm so excited saturday would mean i'd have to bring my brats i mean lovely children and no hubby. which would = more buying and more headaches. lol

she does have a teat that is scabed over on the end that i milk just enough to make sure ducts haven't closed. she gets a homemade goo put on 3 times a day for weeks now due to chapping and bleeding.

put test eggs in the homemade bator lastnight so far holding temp good we'll see if any hatch or if we have to make improvements.

-20 here tonight. Gave the birds corn and tucked em in. Got some more good eggs today. Had a bad chick / hen incident. The chick should recover okay. Mamma did not want an adopted chick and ripped feathers out of its neck. Poor thing was bleeding badly, had to act fast so I used blu kote and it went right back in the brooder. Chick is doing very well, just looks awful.

I heard from Flash Point Farms that you are a certified tester for NPIP.
How far are you from Mason City? Would like to get someone to test my birds, are you available or do you know anyone?
Let me know what you think; or if you can help?

My broody Cochin was talking to her eggs last night, so I bet she'll have babies soon. Just in time to hit -15.

At least it should warm up by the time they want out of the basket. I'm going to move her, basket and all, to the brooder when I get home. When I candled a week ago both eggs were developing so mayby 2? I hope her baby is a pullet this time! I love the 1/2 cochins but so far they have all been cockerels. They are an excellent meat bird though

The other one was a small speckled blue egg. Kind of odd, because I've only gotten two of them and one ended up under her. Not sure who that belongs to.

one of my darn cats unplugged my incubator. with as cold as it was did hold heat long all egg were cold. atleast it was only day 3 so try try again.

my hubby is "this isn't a farm" guy. yesterday i was laying in bed (coop 30 ft from window good planing there) watching hens play in the snow and hay. He comes in and starts watching too talking about hatching eggs and how my 2 sets of barred rocks need to be combined blah blah. anyway he agreed i'd need a bigger incubator. this and the new goats for v-day I'm thinking he did something bad or body snatching.

As much as I would like to help you out, I'm not sure how practical that would be for either one of us! I am smack dab in the middle of the junctions of Hwy 9 & 71 and Hwy 18 & 71, in the Okoboji area. I might suggest you call the Iowa Poultry Association and talk to Brenda. (515.727.4701) They should have a list of folks in your area or at least closer, that can test for you. How many do you need tested? You may also try the MN Board of Animal Health. There may be a tester just over the border from you that can test as well. They do not have to be from the State you live in to test.
If you have any more questions or problems, let me know.

Thanks for the reply, I will try both of the things you suggested. I have about 40 chickens, 2 turkeys, 2 peacocks, 4 ducks, 2 geese ---yowser when I put it out there, makes me realize why I am always buying feed!!!! Do you have any idea what the charge would be for that number of birds. Ball park figure????

Gosh, I was just saying the other day what a hardy bunch of birds I have, last nite was -18 here, I lost one of my beautiful young lavender orpington roosters. I am very bummed, I just hate losing any of them, especially when we are close to the end of this winter CRAP.

It never got as cold as expected here. Only -9 last night and the night before. Am looking forward to the scheduled warm up for Sat and Sun. Need to open garage doors and windows and blow all the dust out.
Chicken sitter came over yesterday for a run through on who gets what feed. She still has no clue, even with labels. Maybe I should draw pictures!
So now am taking 3 Delaware to 3 Orloffs to the folks in Omaha. Emailed pics of the 6 together so their kids could see them and they are delighted to get them on Sunday. Mom said they already have names picked out.... Thats as bad as me.

Oh so sorry about your little roo. I was panicked last night about mine but everyone seems happy today! (-10) I really can't imagine me broody's chicks will hatch. I'm not messing with her at all.
