When I lived with my parents, in 1999 we had 2 ice storms within 2 weeks of each other.
We lived in 10 acres of woods, surrounded by other people's property that was also wooded.....

At first after a snow or ice, it's always really quiet, because the snow deadens sounds, but then it became a constant chorus of branches cracking.

During the second ice storm, the ground was already soaked from the previous meltoff, so instead of branches cracking, we had 4 small pines just plain fall over in our back yard!!!!!!!!

Ice storm...two words that strike fear and dread into the heart of any central Kentuckian..

We were without power for 6 days around this time last year.. My wife spent pretty much all day heating tub after tub of water on the woodstove, just so we could bathe at night. Carrying lanterns to the bathroom.. Chopping water in the once-conveniently-de-iced stock tanks.. Making sure to be awake at least every few hours to feed the stove.. It sucks.

Other folks were without power longer than we were, but all our neighbors abandoned their houses. It's always quiet at our house, but when there's no people and no power for miles...it was REALLY quiet.

Well we did lose our power for a couple of hours this evening. The incubator dropped to 88 but is already back up to temp. The wonderful power people were right on top of fixing all the outages around here as they happened. I was impressed at how fast they got it done. I think it helps to live in a city instead of out in the country.

My neighbor is going to come chop up most the big branches that fell in our yard to feed his wood stove. We have a chipper this spring for the rest. We got off pretty easy from what I have seen (and heard - could hear some really big things falling around here)

Back to regular life as I know it I guess tomorrow...

Takes ya back to a few years ago, doesn't it? I was without power for about 5 days that time, and I'm hoping it doesn't happen again

We are in Durant, about three hours from PBJMaker, and were without power for 4 days in the storm of '09. Today we were without power for about 6 hours--not bad, but I'm a little worried about what could happen tonight when the temps go down into the 20s.

Is it spring yet!?

PBJ--you should see that naked neck frizzle baby I got from you--he is my most fave bird I have, and is so freakin' cute it's not funny. I'm having digital troubles right now but will get a pick for you as soon as I can. I would LOVE another 20 just like him/her!

New Madrid fault. (South East Missouri)

Last Quake was in the early 1800s, an 8.3 it was felt in NY and Boston, it's way past due to rupture again.

There was a quake in Illinois just a couple of years ago. 5.something I believe. I slept through it!

Still lots of ice left in sw Iowa - these are pictures I took last night. Luckily we've only lost power for a couple hours. It is pretty is an ugly sort of way. Sounds like rain this weekend w/more snow on Sunday - only in Iowa

We're probably going to get hit this weekend as well. It's supposed to really start up around 7:00 p.m. tonight. I guess the REAs are putting out the word to be ready for power outages. Is it bad that I'm not too worried? We have a generator that will run our well pump and the heat and a few other things as needed (including the computers, my husband says, but I told him I won't hope for that). We can turn everything off at night and just throw a few extra blankets on the beds. My husband is stopping by the grocery store for a few things that we needed anyway, but there's really no chance of us having to go hungry. The only thing the generator won't run is the water heater, but as long as I can heat enough water on a stove of some sort to do a sponge bath type thing for my daughter and myself and wash our hair, we'll be fine. My husband doesn't mind running around without cleaning, sorry to say. I'm making some food tonight that can be reheated ad-infinitum as well. We have plenty of gas on hand, and my husband is filling up his pick up on the way home so that if we do run out we can syphon some off and use it. And if things really hit the fan, we've got camp stoves that are easily accessible and we have oil lamps and the like.

The only problem I do have is with work. We're having our annual meeting at church this week (if it isn't canceled) and so I needed to run a quick report for that. I'm having my husband stop by the church to do that for me instead.

Okay, and not having a clock at night is going to be a major pain if the power goes out...
