<----- That is ME ! ! !

Sorry, I had a meltdown this morning necessitating emptying my entire garage and reorganizing everything. Two days ago we moved babies around between brooders and it was a hectic mess. Yesterday I told hubby I thought I saw a mouse in the garage and sent him for bait. For two days one of my brooder babies has been fussing all day and every time I went out to see who it was they stopped. This morning I heard it again and walked out just in time to see it wasn't a mouse it was one of my baby chicks! It had apparently fallen out of the brooder when we moved them and I hadn't noticed. We had to move a cabinet and a huge freezer to get to the little guy. He has spilt food on the floor to eat but no water for two days! He was snuggling up to the freezer motor for warmth. I just lost my mind and decided that today was the day that wretched mess of a garage was getting done!

So I took over two Gladiator cabinets with a workbench for my incubators, small brooder and all my ancillary supplies.

Then I took over the corner by the freezer for my big brooder.

I unpacked a bunch of boxes and loaded the trailer to go to the barn with stuff and my car for Goodwill. I won't lose a baby chick in that garage again!

Oh no, I had a tragedy with the Icelandics today.

Two of my babies, the black one and the white spotted one with the cutest crest, got killed by something while I was gone at a wildlife rehab party. This was their first day out and they were in a little pen inside my fenced area in the backyard. I don't know the details yet, my mom just left me a note that they were "brutally killed". I'm so sad... I used to keep chickens out in that fenced area for months in pens and I didn't have predator issues, so I'm shocked that this happened so suddenly, during the day even.

I really loved those two that I lost, I'm so sad and having the usual guilt issues when a predator gets birds.

Only two left, one big pure white one and the slightly runty white one with black spots. I can't believe this happened... I really wanted a good little flock of four or five, and I just adored those two. They were the two that had crests, of course. I'm devastated that those two babies are gone...

Mary, if you rehome some of your Icelandics (as I believe you do?) if you'd be willing to let me buy two or three sometime so I will still have a nice little flock of Icelandics I would be very appreciative. I'm so disappointed that this happened.

EDIT: It turns out, of all crazy things my little seramas, also young, that I put in with them in the pen killed them. Well, that's just shocking... I had no idea this would happen. Gosh, this is so sad.

Mary......so glad you found the little one!

SilverPhoenix........I'm so sorry. I know how you feel with the guilt, I've been there. I lost 9 8 week old babies on Memorial day weekend this year. I was horrified.

Thank you both who offered condolences. It's at least comforting to know others have lost birds tragically like this, too. I'm just stunned, it happened so quickly. This morning they were healthy and happy, and all the sudden they're just gone. Just like that...

I wish I could go change things but of course it's too late. Who knew the seramas would be vicious?

I'll get through, but I am really bummed about it...

Oh, Silver Phoenix I am so sorry that happened to your birds. That is really weird that Seramas could be that vicious. How do you know that is what happened? I am not interrogating you, just curious. And yes, I will have many Icelandics that will be getting new homes. The reason I hatched all these babies was to take some to sell at the Stockton Show. Yours would have been about 5 weeks old now right? I have some that are about the same age. When you are ready let me know and maybe we can find some buddies for your babies.

Take care and don't beat yourself up. Who knew?

I know, I'm shocked! And it was definitely the seramas. The seramas are even smaller than the Icelandics, even though the Icelandics are a few weeks younger, but my little serama cockerel really thinks he's "the man".

It's really strange. When I left, the eight of them were all hanging out looking fine, and an hour later my mom found the two horribly pecked to death. Horrible! I'm trying not to beat myself up, nor be upset at the seramas (I think the cockerel was just trying to protect his mini flock). Thank you for your understanding, every little bit of sympathy and condolences help...

Yes, mine are about five weeks! I'd love to come and pick two or three out, maybe sometime in the next week or two? Let me know what a good time for you would be. You can PM any time. I work Tuesday through Friday until 1:30 PM, but other than that my schedule is pretty open. I've been meaning to come see your flock sometime anyway. Too bad it has to be sad circumstances, but I will give the new Icelandics a great home. And whenever I come over, I can bring the two I still have so you can see them.

One is huge and one is smaller, it's kind of silly.

Chicken predators. Who'd a thunk it.

Sorry for your loss.

4 weeks and I'll have Icelandic chicks.
Worse than waiting for Christmas as a kid.
