Icelandic Chickens

Thanks for all the replies in RE:electric netting! So it might work. The big problem I am having right now is finding their eggs, they are all completely free range and I *know* they are laying I just have no idea where. And come warm weather I'll be working to put in a large garden, and I just cannot have them messing around it. I know very well how fast chickens can decimate a garden.

How DO you contain these little buggers?

Mary: I love Guinea Hogs, hoping to get some myself, maybe next year. The problem with having pigs as livestock, is they are so darn cute and smart. Could never eat them.

Kathy better head to your PO and file a change of address card before "you know who" sends you pigs!! And for gosh sakes don't open the door.

PLEASE tell me pigs can't be shipped.

So glad to see you back here! We've missed you.

You guys are funny - sorry I missed out and went to bed early last night.

Kathy, I'm sure if pigs can be shipped, Mary will find a way. Speaking of shipments, how are those emu eggs doing?

For the winter I have all my chickens in one pen. The Icelandics, the layers, the silkies, even a couple turkeys. For the new years hatch I set a collection of eggs from the group coop. I have 24 birds including 2 Icelandic Roos and 3 non-Icelandic roos. There were green eggs, brown eggs, tan eggs and a few white eggs. Of the 13 chicks growing out in the brooder, 10 look decidedly Icelandic. Those Vikings must have some super strong genes!

Don't worry, these birds will be banded and will never be referred to as Icelandic anywhere but here. I'm separating the Ices this weekend so i can get the first batch of pure eggs for the Easter hatch. Fertility under the Icelandic Roos appears to be real good.

:)

Welcome back Michelle! So you are getting winter? I think it has been cancelled for California. I can live with that! Are you loving the new barn?
