I've got chicks, I've got chicks!! Five little fuzzy bums (one smaller pullet egg didn't hatch, looks like it quit around 10-11 days). Here is a pic of all five in the feed dish with the mealworms Krystal is trying to get them eat. I love watching them!!
I'm so glad DH said to let her have eggs!! I've been anxiously awaiting chicks for months and I'm happy to have some this early in the year. I hope she's as good a momma as Chickie Mama was to her!!
I mean, does it get any sweeter than this...............

It was trying to get as close to Momma as possible without hiding under her! So curious, but still cautious.... Krystal just "talked to it" and tucked her head down, as though she was reassuring it that it was okay! I'm going out now to close everything up......I will, of course, be checking in on them!
Okay, I'm baacckkk.......... I couldn't get any new pics 'cuz the chicks were all "tucked-in" under mom.........
......but that's good, she's taking care of them!
I took a picture of Krystal in her "bucket nest"....it's a heated horse water bucket left over from when I had horses. I turned it flat side down on the ground and put the nest and golf balls I wanted Krystal to sit on in it and then exchanged them for real eggs and plugged it in. I've never had a broody this early and was afraid a heat lamp hanging from the roof (about 5 ft above the floor) of the broody pen wouldn't be enough to keep the eggs in the nest warm enough if she got off of it. It has worked out great, my electric bill will be bigger I'm sure.
This first pic is her in the bucket nest before chicks......the second is the one I just took, you can tell she's hiding something under that wing!
