Icelandic Chickens

Oh my, that looks delicious! I usually make turkey noodle soup when I'm cooking up a pot of soup-stuff, complete with homemade noodles. Now I'm craving some

And I hope you feel better!

I am just paranoid that somehow, my beautiful little Icelandic will not be an Icelandic

Why would you think this? Who did you get her from? The only way to know for sure she is an Icelandic is to know where she came from and to trust that the breeder is keeping them pure.

Flecka looks like a Swedish Flower hen to me.. but heck, she could be an Icelandic.

I have a VERY HAPPY broody Blue Icelandic hen (Blucy) with four little chicks under her. 1 Blue Am. 2 Splash Ams and a barnyard mix. I gave them to her in the middle of the day and she took right to them.

Tonight when I checked on Ida, my other Icelandic mamma, somehow she had coaxed her little ones up onto the roost with her! I have no idea how they flew up there.... I showed my 15 year old when he was helping me stack feed in the feed shed and he couldn't believe it either.

10 patients tomorrow morning and then an appointment with my eye doctor to get new glasses. I hope that they have the same frame style that I'm wearing now.

I got her from a friend on here, Cynthia12. She bought some hatching eggs off of eBay last year. It would have been in June, I think, because Flekka hatched July 4th or 5th. Cynthia does not remember the name of the seller, but she sent me the description that they put in the ad:

12 RARE ICELANDIC HATCHING EGGS !!! we got eggs from a person that imported these birds a few years ago. now that they are laying eggs , we are offerring them to you. they are pure icelandic bloodlines. and are some of the prettiest icelandics that i have ever seen. they are winter hardy and are excellent layers. these are some pictures of my flock. eggs tested possitive for fertility. eggs sent with heat pack. thankyou, and happy bidding !!!! look at my feedback. 11 out of 12 eggs hatched !!!!

The only way for me to find who this seller was would be through Cynthia's transaction records, which I obviously don't have access to

I have felt bad about asking her about it again, for fear that she would feel I was hounding her. She's had some medical issues to deal with lately, and I don't want to be a bother to her. But, sooner or later, I'll need to know. Until I have the proof in hand that Flekka IS Icelandic, and not a SFH, I can't breed her

There can't be that many Icelandic flocks back east, right?

Red, Here is a link to Lyle Behl's website.

He imported eggs in 2003 and has spread them far and wide. Your hen is more than likely from someone who got eggs from him. You can see the hens on his site are mottled and not so different from your hen. I don't know what color egg a Swedish Flower Hen lays, but your pullet should lay a white or very nearly white egg if she is Icelandic. You will notice that he mentions getting some Icelandics from Sigrid T. on his page. She is the one The Sheriff got her original Icelandics from.

Thank you, Mary and Mahonri! I had wondered if Flekka was indirectly from Sigrid's flock. I didn't really even think about Lyle Behl. I am definitely checking that site out.

I have been watching Flekka like a hawk for eggs. Every time I find white eggs, both she and her buddy, my Leghorn, have had access to the same area. They won't lay when they're separated. Little boogers. I am hoping that with the light we just put out in the run for them, they will both feel like laying more frequently - and that my new game cam can help shed some light on who's laying, and when!

Here is my take on the beautiful little pullet. The seller said they were Icelandic, he/she had no reason to pass a SFH as an Icelandic as SFH sell easier and generally for more than Icelandics. I own both, and I have Icelandics that look similar to yours. My Swedish Flowers are much larger and fluffier. Both Icelandic and SFH are only what they are due to their linage/genetics and not an SOP. If you are not planning on selling her eggs/chicks it doesn't really matter. I think she is Icelandic. I hope you enjoy her.

ETA: I think some of this is worded poorly. We'll be gone most of today and tomorrow, I'll try to remember to polish the thought later.

I havent had any of the SFHs but have had Icelandics and she would fit right in with mine in every way. Her eggs will tell the story but I am betting she is Icelandic.

If there is still any lingering doubts then I will gladly buy her from you.

Dar get some hatching eggs of Icelandics for your broody mamas !

I finally took some pictures last night. Here are the four chicks I hatched for the NYE hatch.

I can't wait to see what the two black chicks do.

And here is the long promised picture of Drekkette. She's from an egg I got from Jim out of Drekki's pen.

She is the most lovely shade of blue, of course the only Icelandic that hatched. She got moved yesterday from the growout pen with her hodge podge of buddies and is now living with the big Icelandics. She was starting to look POL and moved right in.
