Icelandic Chickens

Deb, Drekkette is beautiful! Wow, I love it when the blue merges with beige on them like that. Your little brown chickie looks similar to my Gunther when he was itty bitty. He was darker, though. Almost black on his back. I hope you got a bunch of girls in there.

Mary, did ya lose a chicken, there?

Flekka does that to me all the time. I lose sight of her whenever she's in the bushes or standing against seed pods/branches/grasses, especially when there's dappled sunlight on her.

I finally took some pictures last night. Here are the four chicks I hatched for the NYE hatch.

I can't wait to see what the two black chicks do.

And here is the long promised picture of Drekkette. She's from an egg I got from Jim out of Drekki's pen.

She is the most lovely shade of blue, of course the only Icelandic that hatched. She got moved yesterday from the growout pen with her hodge podge of buddies and is now living with the big Icelandics. She was starting to look POL and moved right in.

Deb
She is gorgeous!! Can you post pics of the possible parents of your hatchalong chicks? Please, please, please.....

Here is my take on the beautiful little pullet. The seller said they were Icelandic, he/she had no reason to pass a SFH as an Icelandic as SFH sell easier and generally for more than Icelandics. I own both, and I have Icelandics that look similar to yours. My Swedish Flowers are much larger and fluffier. Both Icelandic and SFH are only what they are due to their linage/genetics and not an SOP. If you are not planning on selling her eggs/chicks it doesn't really matter. I think she is Icelandic. I hope you enjoy her.

ETA: I think some of this is worded poorly. We'll be gone most of today and tomorrow, I'll try to remember to polish the thought later.

I understood what you meant, no worries. Ideally, I'd like to sell some chicks and eggs from her, mostly to help preserve the breed. I'm also very interested to see what kinds of chicks my Icelandics would produce, now that I have a flock.

I havent had any of the SFHs but have had Icelandics and she would fit right in with mine in every way. Her eggs will tell the story but I am betting she is Icelandic.

If there is still any lingering doubts then I will gladly buy her from you.

Dar get some hatching eggs of Icelandics for your broody mamas !

Life is good. And better with Icelandic Chickens !

I plan to keep her, regardless of her lineage

She's one of my favorites, for sure. Even if she was some generic RIR/Leghorn/BO barnyard mix (lol) I'd still keep her. Any chicken that I can pick up and carry around for a while, then have her fall asleep in my arms, is definitely on my A list.

That is cool that other peoples' Icees are like that, also

The other two pullets that I have follow me around when I'm scouting the garden for hidden eggs. One of them is quite happy to chat with me, too. If I didn't own some Icelandics myself, I'd say that this breed was too good to be true. I geek out over them every time they're brought up, hehe.

Alright, how many of you give your hens supplemental light in the winter to help them lay? All three of my pullets are old enough to lay, and plenty red in the face, I might add. I think that the reason they haven't been laying is because of both the short amount of daylight and the deep freezes we've been having of late. Sorry if I'm kind of beating a dead horse, here. I'm obsessed over getting eggs from my girls so that I can be naughty and start incubating.
