Icelandic Chickens

She's gorgeous Deb!

Your babies look a lot like the chicks I hatched last year:

Plus the two I stole:
The one cockerel is the bottom picture, chick on the right. All the rest were females. (paybacks gave me LOTS of cockerels this year)

2 of these chicks had the feathering issue - before Mary started over with her flock.

Chick in the bottom picture on the left turned into this.

Top picture, center chick, became this.

Top picture, chick on the far right turned into this. (she has the feathering issue)

Top picture furthest left became this:

The drama queen (no she's not dead) is the chick in the top picture 2nd from left. She has very heavy leg feathering.

Same girl here, next to her look alike Briet that was my first Icelandic I hatched.

Top picture 2nd from right became this. She had the feathering issue really bad and she died not long after this picture.

Bottom picture, on right became this:

Love those pics !! Anytime that you want to rehome those feather legged hens I will gladly buy them from you and pay shipping as I did with Mary.

I am now seeing this feathering differences as quite similar to what is present in thee Hedemora Breed, there are three different feather types , and in Norway breeders keep and use all three.

I donot want that extreme total feather blown up, I do want feathered legs, and Crests as I think it will work to their advantage here in Northern MI just as similar works for Hedemoras in Norway.

Time will tell.

This spring I will have my Isi that I got from Mary, he is now two years old. He'll be home with his girls in a couple of weeks.

Enjoy all, make it an Icelandic Year !

Life is good, and better with Icelandic Chickens !

Loving all the chick pictures and the beautiful variations in the Icelandics. My little flock has just started to lay again, but I didn't know it because they somehow got into the fenced off part of their pen. Sounds like typical behavior, doesn't it. Now that I know where they have been laying I will be able to get some eggs to incubate from them. I've got to be quick though, because of the 10 eggs I found up there yesterday, 9 were frozen. Mine are laying white and someone is laying a tinted egg. I am very excited about them finally laying. No extra light for them either.

I also love the variety in them, that alone is woth having them for, but they are also natural free rangers.

Back to the feathering, I think the 'enhanced' feathering is what is also seen in the Hedemora. It makes sense seeing as how both breeds share common ancestors.

its picture time....took these over the weekend. the first two pics were taken about 3 days after hatching....the following pics were about 5 days after hatching. look at how much the wings have developed in that amount of time.
