Icelandic Chickens

Yes but NotAFarm said these were special and wouldn't dare do the sort of things that the CA Icelandics do

Loving that crest! I don't think any of mine will have crests....I should have seen signs by now right?

But they carry the genes for it so maybe some of their chicks will.

Your blonde chipmunk chick is crested. The crests take a bit to grow in, but if you know what to look for, you can see it in some of them at hatch.

Yes! (iPad is limited in the emoticons....so picture the fist pumping guy). Ok what are you seeing that I'm not seeing that says "yes, it will be crested"?

Nice pictures!
I was sitting on a bucket in the great turkey room next to the Icelandic pen in the coop, and was wondering when are those July 15 batch of Icelandics are going to lay?!?! As I was pondering that question, one of the black Icelandic pullet with the gold lace neck flew up to the milk crate that I had stapled to a stud, and hopped in. I stood up and she flew off the milk crate, and I looked in through the chicken wire, and could see some white stuff partly buried in the straw. I excitedly ran out of the turkey room, and into the Icelandic pen, and found 4 eggies!!!! YAY!!!

Notice that this girl is broody by the roof, 8 feet up. And yes, she hatched her chicks there. I moved her after the chicks hatched. She was only 7 months old too.
OH MY! Going to be very careful setting up the coop for these guys when I get them.

Kelly, What did you use to attached the hardware cloth?
I remember this story, do you still have her?
They are ring shanked nails with the plastic coating around the tip. I got them at Home Depot. You put them in with a hammer, but make sure they are where you want them, they are dang near impossible to get out - which is why I used them, don't want anything getting in my coops.

And yep, I still have her, she is a wonderful mama. She has been sweet enough to keep me in eggs this winter - but I think she will go broody again soon. I have her, Briet, Briet look alike, and the one I call Roadrunner (she has the feathering issue and she looks like a roadrunner, so teeny with long legs)
