Icelandic Chickens

That video is wonderful. I need a broody hen to raise chicks. Non of mine seem to go broody until late summer/early fall when I don't feel like dealing with any more young cockerels (since that is all I seem to hatch).

My Icelandics somehow got a hold of the first chick and pulled it through the cage it was in with the broody. They tore it up and started eating it. I feel so sick and so upset right now.

So, does anyone else on here have fertile Icelandic eggs they'd sell? I would like to add to the bloodlines in my flock. I already have some from birdguy (Shawn) I have enjoyed them (except for today)

Sorry, I know it sounds callous after what just happened. I am just so done feeling right now. I don't know why all my animals keep dying and getting killed this past year, but I'm sick and tired of it. If anyone has eggs, please feel free to PM me and I'd be happy to talk more.

RIP, little Sorg.

That happens when the hen isnot really protective. Its best all around to use hardware cloth or very small wire around a pen bottom if a chick can get through.

I have lost them that way too, so its not just you. A single chicks is vulnerable enough as is, the odds are against them. Next ones, and it will happen, isolate the hen and the chick until the chick is at least well feathered out.

Spring is coming, days here in the 30s now and high 20s at night, still got 5" of snow on the ground, which has settled from over a foot.

I hope to be filling the incubator the end of April.

That's a rough way to lose a baby. Last year I bought some rabbit hutches off Craigslist so I have a good place for the mommas and babies now.
